“Atmospheric Hotel in heart of medieval San Gimignano”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 August 2014

We arrived at this hotel after a long journey and were met by exceptionally friendly hotel manager on reception who offered us the choice of two rooms. Our 3rd Floor room had a fantastic view (huge windows) and the room was cosy and bathroom clean and bright. Breakfast was in the most wonderful palazzo style room. Lovely courtyard too. The well and cellars in this hotel are fascinating too! Very close to all the action in the town. Reception were extremely helpful with arranging our transport to our next destination. Had a wonderful stay in the most amazing town perched on a hill-top in Tuscany. Come for the amazing views, history and wine! If we return to San Gimignano we will be staying at L'antico Pozzo.

It's a beautiful location, it's a beautiful building, it's a nice staff, you have nice rooms. Only problems: you should have any kind of mobility problems: you cannot park around the hotel so you must walk up and down and it's hilly. Same in the hotel you have an elevator but for the last miles where you always have some stairs. But the staff is doing their best to help you, even with technical solutions when you have not enough power outlets. When they built the hotel there was not any PCs, SmartPhone, Tablets, eReaders, electric shavers etc.. Only the breakfast was too typical Italian which means one Espresso drink (alternative: Caffe americano... terrible) and something sweet. It is better to see a bar around. Nevertheless it was a lovely place and we did not regret that we stayed there and would do it again.

Thank you very much for choosing L 'Antico Pozzo for your stay in San Gimignano and recommending us to the other travelers.
So pleased that you enjoyed being with us, we are thrilled to know that you enjoyed our care to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

I agree with you about some structural features of the building as timeworn stones staircase and hallways that, although contributing to its charm and authenticity, require a minimum of adaptation for guests with reduced mobility, however, all areas and services of the hotel are fully reached by a lift.

We also have many rooms on the third floor particularly suitable for guests with reduced mobility, being on the same level and at a minimum distance from the elevator.

I regret to know that our breakfast was not to your liking, I would though disagree with your definition, an image that is very different from the majority of comments that we usually receive highlighting the quality and variety of our buffet.

That said, I sincerely apologize for the "unlucky day" of our cook, he would certainly deserved to taste your american coffee, prepare it as you would expect immediately and probably ensure a good start to all other guests..

We thank you again for your precious comments and look forward to welcoming you again to Hotel L'Antico Pozzo

Warm regards

We stayed in room 14 with our twin boys. The room was magnificent- high celings, magnifcent decor and situated on the 2nd floor with windows opening to the street.Beautiful linens and every detail taken care of. Breakfast was great with many choices, however the addition of a protein, boiled eggs or cold cuts will make it perfect! The hotel arranged for us via email car transfer from Firenze train station and we were very pleased with the services and not having to worry about arranging. It was nice to be dropped at the door of our hotel given how difficult it is to access this walled italian town, if you are driving your own car. i would recommend this highly. The innkeepers were so nice and helpful. Emmanuel and her sister really take care of their guests with so much class. I definitely will return and refer others to this hotel in San Gimignano. Thank you again for a wonderful stay and for your hospitality.

Thank you for sharing a fantastic review of your stay at L'Antico Pozzo!
We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed our Dante rooms and we thank you for your lovely comments about our guest care, it was a joy to have you staying with us with your children giving us an happy atmosphere for the hotel.

Together with my 2 sisters, Elizabeth and Mariangela, we manage the hotel personally in a familiar way and it is a real pleasure to know that our intention to make our guests feel at home was successful.

Thank you for your suggestions on the breakfast, we currently provide 4 different types of cold cuts and various types of cheese offering a separate menu for eggs however I think your proposal to add boiled ones in the morning buffet is definitely a great idea!

Thank you for being our guest, we all hope to see you soon at L'Antico Pozzo!
Warmest regards

My wife and 6 year old spent 3 nights at this old world but small hotel our triple room was spacious and airy, wifi worked ok, nice outdoor setting for breakfast. Locations is unbeatable. right in the centre with lots of shops and restaurants nearby. The front desk is very very helpful and made us welcome and gave good advise. On the downside, parking is complicated but what do you expect in a hotel bang in the pedestrian area. We will be back!

Room Tip: take a larger room facing the street

San Gimignano is a beautiful medieval hilltop town in the rolling Tuscan countryside. I knew it was famous but didn't realise until i got there just how much of a tourist mecca this world heritage listed place is. The hotel L'Antico Pozzo was a perfect place to stay, I was very lucky to be able to book a room at the last minute for my 2 days of sight seeing following a conference in Rome.
The hotel is in a beautifully preserved building that has been a convent, an aristocratic family home, and now a charming small hotel, retaining a sense of the history it has seen over the last 400 years.
The front door opens straight onto a cobbled street that stretches from one of the city gates to the central plaza, lined with souvenir shops and little restaurants. The roads are closed to traffic during the day except for service vehicles, and throngs of tourists fill the town all day.

I was very pleased to have taken a taxi to the hotel that could drive to the door, instead of the bus that would have dropped me at the city gates. Dragging heavy suitcases over cobbles up and down hilly streets is not fun. Once ensconced in my little attic room (they have managed to discreetly add an elevator into the building, leaving only a few stairs to access bedrooms on the upper floors) I loved the views of the surrounding countryside over the tiled roofs of the village.

I really enjoyed staying in the heart of the town. The best time of day was early morning and at dusk, once most of the visitors had left, when it was possible to wander the hilltop walled garden and imagine what it might have been like to live there hundreds of years ago.

Room Tip: My room was a small single room at the top, which had it's own charm with views out to the surro...

The hotel location is fantastic. We went back and forth between staying somewhere outside the walled town where you would get beautiful views and staying in the town. We are so happy we opted for inside the town. The roads are narrow, winding and up and down; we did not want to drive at night. The town comes alive after the tourists leave. The lighting of the town has a magical effect, and the locals fill the piazzas for outdoor concerts and gelato. We picked several fabulous restaurants in the town that had amazing views of the countryside so that we got our "views," too. The hotel is perfectly located on main street so that you can have your windows open and hear the bustle below. It was nice to be able to return to the hotel after a day of touring the countryside and neighboring towns to take a break in the hotel before heading out to dinner. If you want quiet the double paned windows and wood shutters block out all noise. The internet works well, and the outdoor terrace was lovely for the simple but good breakfasts of fruit, cereal, cheese, croissants and other sweets. The old well in the hotel and ancient stone staircase down to the basement add an element of history to the stay. Our room (the quadruple Dante room) was HUGE, and the bathroom clean. The beds were much more comfortable than they appeared, and the staff was friendly. While parking offsite is an expense, it is not a nuisance; there is an elevator so that you don't have to carry bags up, and our rolling bags rolled easily the short block to the hotel.

Room Tip: I only stayed in the Dante (the quadruple room) and thought it was fantastic for the price.

In previous trips to San Gimignano, we never stayed overnight. What a treat to enjoy the evening in the center of this most charming town. Arriving to a warm welcome, we were then shown to o spacious and charming room. When we asked to visit friends nearby, a car and driver were arranged quickly and efficiently. Claudio, the hotel's driver, was, by the way, wonderful. Accommodations and service were super. Kudos to the hotel owners !!!!!
