“Brilliant location in the centre of the historic town”
Reviewed 12 July 2010

We stayed here for 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the access it provided to the historic town. Located in the Piazza della cisterna you could walk all around the town in the evening when all the bus trips have gone and it feels like you live there. I would recommend a restaurant called Il Pino - we had a mixed antipasti starter which was varied, large and delicious followed by sliced of beef cooked in the over with truffles. You would be hard pressed not to eat well in this town. We even discovered a hot tub on the hotel's terrace!

If you are looking for a taste of good Tuscan hospitality then go no further.San Gimignano is a good place to visit as part of your Italian trip and this hotel allows you stay in the heart of town. When all tourist busses depart after 6pm then sit back and enjoy the locals .

What an AMAZING place! We just loved it! The hotel is situated in the center at the Piazza. The views are from our hotel rooms were SPECTACUAR!!! The rooms and the bathrooms were a good comfortable size. The hotel is very quant and worth every penny just for the view.
We had dinner one night at a restaurant called Quattro Gati where I had the best meal I had in Italy. I had the Pappardelle with truffle oil which was amazing! Pricey but worth it! Also, in the Piazza there is an amazing gelateria with unique flavors. The gorgonzola and nut was delicious!
You cannot drive in the city, but you can drive up to the hotel and drop your things off. They will tell you where to park.

We arrived (2 couples) by car, fortunately the sat nav talked us in as the hotel is in the centre of San Gimignano in a restricted area. The rooms were both excellent, quiet aircon (It was unseasonably hot), lovely bathrooms and large soft towels (must be a fetish as I mentioned them in other reviews)our rooms overlooked the square which was interesting and as long as the windows were kept closed were quiet.
Breakfast was one of the best we had in Italy cereals, fruit juice croissants, bread & rolls boiled eggs, meats cheese etc and great coffee. all taken outside on a shaded terrace.
If travellers are in San Gimignano on a Saturday there is a small market in the adjacent square including a stall selling cheese and the most wonderful cooked pork ( whole suckling pig) they were doing a roaring trade in large rolls with a generous helping of the slices, great if you are a carnivore like us, this provided a very adequate lunch with a bottle of wine on the same terrace used for breakfast.
We dined at the Vecchie Mura situated on the walls of the town on a magnificent terrace overlooking the valley to the east of the town, the food was superb, service was good even though the place was full and as dusk fell and the lights went on across the horizon it was a magical experience.
San Gimignano is great after about 5 p.m when the tour buses have all left, we keep returning to it and will certainly use the Leon Bianca again

We stayed here for 3 nights during the time that the Gran Fondo (bike race) was held and we had a fantastic time. The hotel is ideally located on the piazza - the setting is fairytale-like. To see 2000 cyclists come into the piazza to start the bike race was exciting and memorable. The ringing church bells were beautiful and although they really interrupted my sleep my husband had no trouble at all with them.

The room was the best that we had during our stay in Italy - we had a jaw-dropping view out to the hills that we enjoyed through the huge windows in our room but as a little bonus you had the same view when sitting on the toilet :)

The breakfast was really good and was pretty busy while we were staying there, so it's recommended to get down reasonably early to get some warm eggs. As with almost everywhere in Italy, the coffees was good too.

There are so many places to eat and drink in this relatively small town that gets so busy with people during the day but as night comes the tourists leave and that is when the town is at its peaceful best.

My wife and I wanted to sample life in Tuscany and after much research we chose to stay in two of the better known hillside towns, San Gimignano and Montalcino. Trip Advisor was once again invaluable in assisting us choosing the best option for our budget and requirements. We were warned by friends that San Gimignano would be crowded with tourists, it was, but this did not worry us, In the evening they disappear and you can explore the town as though you were a resident. Hotel Leon Bianco was a perfect choice for us. Located in the middle of the main town, the Piazza della Cisterna, it was an ideal base to explore this medieval jem. The hotel is run by a family who obviously take great pride in providing a first class experience for their guests. Our room was large, appointments were tastefully selected, well maintained and we had the bonus of a view over the Tuscan Hills. The included breakfast was fabulous and could be taken on a terrace in fine weather. Free WiFi was available. We had no problem finding restuarants in short walking distance from the hotel that were reasonably priced and served quality regional fare. We had to park our hire car on the outside of the main town walls for around 20 Euro a night. It was a leisurely ten minute walk to and from the hotel. We thoroughly recommend this hotel.

We have just come back from our 3rd stay at Hotel Leon Bianco. Everyone is always so friendly and speak excellent english. If you arrive by car, you can park outside for 30 minutes to drop off your luggage, then you will need to park it in one of the many car parks outside of the town (about a 10 minute walk). The cost of the car parks vary from 20 euros per day to 6 euros per day. We parked ours in the 6 Euros per day and the walk back to the hotel only took us 10 mins although it is mostly up hill. However, there is a city bus that you can jump on for no charge and it will take you to the main entrance.

Our room was a good size, plenty of room with outstanding views accross the tuscan countryside. Good sized ensuite shower room - all very clean. Breakfast has a good selection of cereals, cheese, ham, fruit, bread & croissants, along with fresh tea & coffee.

The main bonus about this hotel is the location - right in the centre of San Gimignano opposite the well and a stone's through from many restuarants, bars and ice cream shops!

You will not be dissappointed. We hope to be back there in the Autumn!
