“The perfect place for a quiet get-away in the heart of Tuscany.”
Reviewed 5 May 2011

This 5-room B&B -- a centuries old restored fortified villa -- is located on a hilltop, a few minutes from San Gimignano in Tuscany. Very quiet, scenic location. Antique furniture. Just a short drive to Siena, Florence, Chianii, Pisa, etc. They were very accommodating of our special dietary restrictions -- cooked a special breakfast for us every day. The only negative I can think of is that there is no restaurant on site. However, the hotel also operates an excellent restaurant in San Gimigiano which served us the best steak we've encountered in 27 years of traveling in Europe. The unpaved road up to the hotel was challenging but ensured that there were no traffic noises.

Room Tip: Ask for room on an upper floor -- less foot noise.

Great location with views of San Gimignano's towers in the distance. All bedrooms were clean and had there own ensuite and each had a wonderful view of the tuscan hills. We had lots of fun taking turns in the kitchen and trying out the local food and wines. San Gimignano, Sienna and the Chianti Region were all an easy drive away. Also supermarkets were only 15minutes away. Lots of wonderful memories and we will be talking about our holiday for a long time,

Pretty Villa, and nice spacious, clean rooms. Road to it over a rough gravel road. A bit remote. Surprised us with wanting to charge extra for Air conditioning (Euro 600). No laundry facilities or clothes line (extra cost again). Pool area not so good - a bit tired and in need in some maintenance. Lots of Mossi's. Dining table large and good, but dining seating poor with bench seats at the wrong height. Wanted extra for room service and pool towels. We all thought too expensive for what it was.

Total gem! Pretty much exactly what you imagine when you think of the ideal Tuscan getaway, and then some. You ride up a gravel road up into the hills and away from the rest of the world. The grounds and the setting are stunning—beautiful terraces and gardens with roses and lavender and views for miles across the vineyards and olive groves. The house is a wonderfully restored, rustic stone house dripping with history. Rooms simply and tastefully furnished, each one with a view you could stare at for days: the towers of San Gimignano across rolling hills. Best of all, the innkeepers and proprietors: Cledy and her husband are warm, welcoming, helpful, extremely well-informed and passionate about the area and its history, but also low-key and unassuming. Breakfast is at a shared table, which sounds odd at first, but ultimately is a nice touch as it encourages friendly conversation with fellow guests and adds to the air of general conviviality. Even the pool has a drop-dead gorgeous view. I could go on and on. . . Highly, highly recommended!

I stayed here with friends for my birthday in July 2010. Cledy and Roberto were very friendly and welcoming. You definitely need a car and the gravel track feels like a bit of an adventure, but it is worth the journey. The place is beautifully kept - comfortable rooms, wonderful gardens and fabulous views, including of San Gimignano and its towers. The owners also have a great restaurant in San Gimignano, where we celebrated my birthday. A marvellous place I hope I am able to go back to.

We really enjoyed our two night stay at this remotely hidden gem of a B&B, tucked away high up on one of the hills of San Gimignano! The owners live in the house next to the B&B hotel and they are an extremely nice and helpful couple!! Thanks you very much Mr and Mrs Tancredi for your superp hospitality

Recently returned from a week in Tuscany staying at this renovated farmhouse on a hill with views stretching to San Gimignano 5K away. Easy to find thanks to Google Maps. A car is absolutely essential. Greeted warmly by Cledy, the owner, whose English was reasonable. The room (Smeralda) was spacious enough but a bit dark with small windows. The decor is rustic and Cledy obviously has a fine eye for detail. A nice touch was a water cooler in the corridor outside the room - so no need to lug in bottles of mineral water. No minibar but there was a fridge in the room.
The views outside are magnificent - especially from the pool. No parasols by the pool but there is a covered pergola affording some shade.
The fortezza is well placed for visiting the Sienese hill towns and Florence is about an hour away by car or by train from Poggibonsi. San Gimignano is 5 minutes drive away - excellent but pricey restaurants. The Dulcis - owned & run by Cledy's husband Roberto is particularly good but beware the steak - it is massive! He gives a 10% discount to residents.
In summary, an excellent relaxing stay despite some bad weather but a bit overpriced for a B&B.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Fortezza de 'Cortesi is a place dedicated to very special guests, who want to totally immerse themselves in the pleasure of an experience in the Tuscan countryside without sacrificing the charm and comfort of an exclusive environment. A charming resort between Florence and Siena in San Gimignano country, that has been awarded the "agriturismo" Tuscany top classification of three wheat sheaves. Standing on top of a hill, with a surrounding view of the spectacular Tuscan countryside and Chianti hills, it overlooks the famous towers of San Gimignano, only 5 kilometres away. This is where history, art and culture join together with the beauty of colours and rhythm of nature. A good retreat but also a site that tells us a story full of important events, which began in the Etruscan period and continues through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance until today where the close archaeological excavations show a history of ancient civilizations. A special dwelling with a unique wealth of valuable cultural experience. The property, restored from an ancient fortress with medieval tower documented from 10th century sources, is located on a variant of the ancient pilgrim route of Via Francigena. It was here in 1220 the towns of San Gimignano and Colle val d'Elsa formed an alliance. It achieved its splendour in the Renaissance when the then proprietor, Paolo Cortesi, one of the most prominent Italian humanists and secretary to Pope Julius II, made it a center of humanistic studies as well as his residence with the name "Castrum Cortesianum". In this place he set up a library for public use, welcomed numerous important members of the political and cultural european elite of the time and wrote the "De Cardinalatu" one of the cornerstones of Italian humanistic literature. The place is mentioned in the Italian Literature textbooks. Following rigorous restoration that maintains intact all the fascination of antiquity, we have created an environment of 550 sqm rich in charm and precious in its uniqueness. We offer up to 12 guests the opportunity of a self-regeneration experience, where silence, stillness and privacy are the true luxury of taking a holiday nowadays, far from the frenzy of stress. We host our guests in 5 comfortable double bedrooms and a romantic 67 sqm suite with superb bedroom and private drawing room with fireplace, that enjoys the privacy of the medieval tower. All bedrooms windows look out to the magnificent profile of San Gimignano marching across the horizon and the typically Tuscan countryside with hills covered by cypress trees, vineyards and olive groves. Each room is exclusively for 2 people and individually furnished with precious textiles by the renowned stylist Rubelli, genuine antique furniture and family objects, kettle with tea and coffee selection, safes, mini-fridge, mosquito nets, air conditioning/heating, music sound system, wi-fi, ensuite bathroom with hairdryer and basic toiletries. The resort also features comfortable sitting and living rooms, old fireplaces, medieval stairs, a beautiful garden with terrace and gazebo, a large 6x12 pool to sunbathe, relax or contemplate the breathtaking view of the Tuscan landscape. We do not have triples bedrooms, nor joined beds. We welcome children more than 14 years old. Lavish Tuscan Buffet Breakfast, daily cleaning, private parking. The property produces purest San Gimignano saffron, extra virgin olive oil, vegetables. Cooking class, tastings of our products and dinners on request. From Fortezza de' Cortesi you may easily daily reach Florence, Siena, Volterra, Pisa, Lucca, Montalcino, Pienza and many other important Italian places. ... more   less
