Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: If you are visiting the ancient towers of San Gimignano, which stand sentinel over the Il Piano Vineyards, do get in touch and come and visit; but please make a reservation first, we will always do our best to accommodate you, or book for a visit in the coming months. The vineyards and winery have been lovingly tended by the Carlesi-Zucconi family since 1973. Begin with a stroll through the vines on your guided tour of one of this region's most traditional wineries. Taste our house wines in the underground cantina; then afterwards relax with breathtaking views of San Gimignano and the surrounding bucolic Tuscan countryside while enjoying our premier wines accompanied by local cuisine.

It's hard to add much to the other reviews.

Arranged afternoon visit at short notice via email, David replied very quickly and was very flexible re timings. Tuscany in August is full of tourists and we wanted to get away from the madding crowds!

So with 2 kids (14&11) who weren't that inspired by the thought, we headed off - what a wonderful location - long tree lined drive up steep hill (not for faint hearted) - to hilltop paradise with amazing views.

David was perfect host, and after a leisurely tour of vineyard and estate with copious information being imparted, we tried all the wines along with some yummy snacks. It was brilliant, relaxing and chilled.

Yes there is a charge for the tasting, but it's well worth it for the exclusivity and setting. The brochure advises a couple of hours, but we were there for 3 hours, and there was no pressure to move on. There was no pressure to buy wine either and all in all it was a lovely afternoon - even the kids said so!!!

We did many wonderful things on our recent trip to Italy, and this event with David Hughes was among the best of the best. It is hard to add more to the descriptions other reviewers have already provided because our experience was the same -- breathtaking views, delicious food, lovely wine to taste and a fabulous host who is knowledgable and personable. This was an experience I will always remember.

My husband and I both agreed that this tour was the highlight of our trip ( We went to France, major cities in Italy, Greek, and Turkey). I've researched wineries in San Gimignano and found this place. It was the great decision.

We did winery tour with lunch included. The host, David is very nice and knowledgeable. We sat outside table on the new patio area surrounded by gorgeous view of Tuscan vineyards after the tour. He even prepared vegetable/seafood meals for me as I emailed him before hand that I don't consume meats. Meals here was the best food we've had during the trip. We came here in late May this year and the weather was perfect. This was the most beautiful place I've ever been.

Next time we come to Italy, we want to stay in Tuscany for 2 weeks and definitely come back to Fattoria Il Piano again!

Just returned from our wine tour with lunch and wine tasting... We had an incredible time! David was great, so informative and knowledgeable about so many different subjects, and really such a friendly, personable and inviting host and gentleman! My 16 year old triplets were equally impressed! We tasted 9 different wines and had a most incredible lunch with fantastic Tuscan fare. The tour was very interesting and the wines were very good. We really enjoyed the Colli Senesi Chianti DOCG 2010 and the Vernaccia di San Gimagnano DOC 2011. Couldn't have asked for anything more!

My sister and I visited Il Piano 6/7/14 from our stay in Volterra. We were captivated by the surrounding countryside as we drove up the road, but we were not expecting what awaited us at the top of the hill! The view over the Tuscan valley back toward San Gimignano was just spectacular. David our host greeted us and commenced a wonderful tour of the grounds, down to the underground cantina where we tasted the bianco and rosso table wines. We then walked back up to the enoteca (tasting terrace) where David had prepared our lunch of local Tuscan cold table meats, cheeses, accompanied by the Il Piano Estate wines which were superb. We finished our delicious luncheon with the Il Piano Vin Santo dessert wine and coffee. The experience was memorable, great value for money, and a taste of Tuscany not to be missed.
