David was our host for a wonderful wine tasting, lunch, and tour on a lovely June afternoon. My wife and I were in Venice for a wedding and drove to Tuscany/San Gimignano area for two days. I did all of my research on Trip Advisor and I was very appreciative of the wonderful reviews. You absolutely cannot go wrong going to Fattoria Il Piano. Although did not stay the night, it is something we will consider in the future. Lunch was awesome, wine tour was informative, and it is something we will never forget. David was a great host.
We have a rule to never go back to the same holiday place, but decided to break it for Fattoria Il Piano and we were so glad we did!
We stayed 15 years ago as a young married couple and returned with our two children, aged 11 and 8!
Vittoriana, Paulo and David are excellent hosts. They made us feel so welcome again...they even arranged for special local delicacies and Mara made us fresh biscotti to celebrate our return.
We stayed in L'Orto, which is spacious, private, beautifully decorated and a true gem. Beautiful views on San Gimignano and the vineyards.
The WiFi worked well, pool was great and 2 washing machines next to the pool made it all so easy to travel lightly!
We did a free wine tour with David, from the UK. Wow, it was great to see how the wine industry works in Tuscany and how it differs from other Italian regions. He showed us the family gardens, their private chapel and underground cellars. The wine tasting was extensive and very informative.
The atmosphere on the farm is that of true serenity, simplicity and beauty.
We loved day trips to the market in Poggibonsi and to Volterra. San Gimignano was great early morning and late evening........when the day tourists were gone.
Hopefully we will be able to return again.........less than 15 years from now!
Just returned from a lovely stay at Fattoria Il Piano. Iconic location of the estate in the foothills of San Gimignano with stunning views all around. So peaceful and beautiful. Accommodation was extremely comfortable and clean. Molly the dog was a constant companion and the family Carlesi were the most genial of hosts. Ideal location for day trips to Florence or Pisa or Siena and the famous San Gimignano is just a 5 minute drive away. Volterra is about 30 minutes in the other direction. Thoroughly recommend for anyone who appreciates the pure Tuscany. Very safe for families with children too.
We spent a week at the first floor, 1 bedroom La Vanda apartment. Though I know it is unlikely,
I will be happy to go back there, and I strongly recommend Il Piano as a great place with helpful staff, superb views, good location and comfortable accomodation.
Location-wise, the place is not too far away from Florence, Siena and Pisa. It is very close to San Gimignano (We had a view of the towers of San Gimignano from the flat window),
but far enough so that you don't have to worry about the crowds. In fact some guides on the web even suggest that you should skip San Gimignano, but that would be a mistake. It is far better to stay in a place like this, and drive down in the mornings and nights to enjoy the magic of San Gimignano town.
There are several walking options around the place, including the one to the nearest farm which sells good organic products. The famous Via Francigena is very close. We followed it to Colle Val D'Elsa and found it a superb experience. Of course it's a longish walk. We took a bus from Colle Val D'Else back to San Gimignano, and then walked back to Il Piano.
The drive up to the place is steep and you should be careful not to do it in the dark the first
time or two.
Overall: quite a magical experience, and good value for money.
Nice people, confortable apartment, extremely quiet and peaceful. No luxury however it's the best location to spend a wonderful time in Toscany. 5 minuts from San Gimigniano, 30 minuts from Sienna, 45 minuts from Florence and 40 minuts to visit the Chianti area. To bad we were there only for 7 days....
