We visit Siena often and try to eat at the Grotta Santa Caterina (da Bagoga) whenever we can. Although we usually enjoy eating on an outside terrace, we much prefer being inside at the Grotta, where the atmosphere is exceptionally pleasant and the service is far superior to that provided at the outdoor tables. The food is excellent, especially the beef dishes. We are impressed by the fact that the waiters often suggest wines to go with particular dishes but never push an expensive choice. In fact, last time they actually suggested a cheaper wine than the one we had at first selected, and it was quite good. Dresses as a chef in a white hat, the proprietor manages to greet guests enthusiastically while still overseeing the kitchen. One sign that this is a good place to eat is that, at least in the evenings, most of the diners are locals, though many of the waiters do speak good English. We highly recommend it.
