“Excellent Food, once we got there!”
Reviewed 15 June 2013

This restaurant was recommended to us by the B & B we stayed at. What she didn't mention was that you do NOT follow your GPS to find it. Park at the bottom, or take a taxi. Do NOT attempt the drive!
We had a lovely meal at a great price! The wine was very good as well. We got there early, so our service was wonderful. I would totally recommend this restaurant to everyone!

“A Favorite in Siena”
Reviewed 27 April 2013

We visit Siena often and try to eat at the Grotta Santa Caterina (da Bagoga) whenever we can. Although we usually enjoy eating on an outside terrace, we much prefer being inside at the Grotta, where the atmosphere is exceptionally pleasant and the service is far superior to that provided at the outdoor tables. The food is excellent, especially the beef dishes. We are impressed by the fact that the waiters often suggest wines to go with particular dishes but never push an expensive choice. In fact, last time they actually suggested a cheaper wine than the one we had at first selected, and it was quite good. Dresses as a chef in a white hat, the proprietor manages to greet guests enthusiastically while still overseeing the kitchen. One sign that this is a good place to eat is that, at least in the evenings, most of the diners are locals, though many of the waiters do speak good English. We highly recommend it.

“Excellent Meal at Grotta”
Reviewed 25 January 2013

We asked the desk clerk at the hotel to recommend a restaurant and he raved about Grotta di Santa Catarina di Bagoga.

Therefore, after getting lost several time and eventually having a nice local lady walk us to the restaurant, we settled into a table in a cozy dining room that was decorated with warm brick walls, arches, and painted plates.

We decided to order a bottle of Morellino di Scansano, because this was the one DOCG in Tuscany we had not yet tried and weren’t planning on visiting. It was very good, with rich dried cherry fruit, spices, and plush tannins – more like a merlot, than a sangiovese.

We started with a simple salad, but for the main course I splurged on a filet mignon in truffle sauce. The aroma of the truffles when it arrived at the table made me giddy with joy, and I was impressed with the small pieces of black truffle sprinkling the steak and sauce. However, I was even more impressed with the waiter came over and began to shave very thin slices of white truffle over the top of the steak. Yessssssss…doesn’t get much better than this.

We ended with a double dessert of two different types of cake and two glasses of the local vin santo (see photo). It was a very nice meal!

“Excellent Food, Excellent Value!”
Reviewed 3 December 2012

My favorite restaurant of my 2 week trip to Italy! Excellent food and the prices were extremely reasonable for the quality. In addition to the regular fare on most Italian menus, this place had some interesting local dishes including the wild boar so popular in the area. The meats/steaks are especially outstanding and they have a nice wine list, but even if you order the house wine, you can't go wrong. I would definitely go back and order the tasting menu.

The service, I will admit was not good. The rude tattooed waiter (mentioned in other reviews) would be fired immediately if I owned this restaurant and he really does an otherwise great place a big disservice. He acted like we were a HUGE chore for him to bother with. Until the chef/owner came out of the kitchen and we gave him a round of applause (which of course the chef loved and he came over and talked to us, showed us photos on the wall if him participating in his youth in the local famous horse race, etc.). The chef/owner was WONDERFUL, talented and friendly. Once he saw the boss being nice to us the rude waiter started acting a little nicer, but it was far too little too late.

But I would still go back. The food and the ambiance was excellent. Hopefully the owner will get wise and get rid of that waiter, but the place is still worth it even with him there.

“Great Sienese atmosphere”
Reviewed 26 October 2012

We really enjoyed this restaurant for its Palio di Siena "sports club" atmosphere! Around the walls were displayed crests and colorful flags of the seventeen contrade, or city wards that compete in the traditional horse races. The service was excellent, and the food selection included many traditional and delicious Sienese dishes. Excellent local wine! Our bill is a beautiful keepsake of our experience also, there as it displays each of the contrade crests around the margins.
