“So pretty!”
Reviewed 26 February 2008

I had a very pleasant stay at Certosa di Maggiano. Rooms are very well decorated and comfortable. I loved to eat at their restaurant "Il canto" which has 1 star Michelin. The location was perfect to explore around the magnificent Tuscany. I would love to go back there and I higly reccomend it! Barbara - London (UK)

We were attracted to the Certosa by the photographs we had seen and by it's vicinity to Siena. It is a 15 minute walk away. The hotel is in a beautiful position, and has lovely gardens but it doesn't deserve its 4 star rating. The staff aren't friendly or particularly helpful. The restaurant is especially bad. Meals were almost painfully stiff and formal and after a lunch and dinner there we gave up and ate in Siena for the rest of the trip.

The sheets on our bed were so stiffly starched that white powder rubbed off on our faces and our skin dried out within minutes of lying down. When we requested different sheets, we were told that wouldn't be possible. Disappointing. Worth visiting for the setting, but not for a relaxing holiday.

This is a high-end high-price Tuscany Hotel, which used to be a monastry. The church is still used on sunday, so don't wonder when you hear them singing while hanging around on the pool.

The whole area is perfectly situated just outside Siena, only 10 minutes of walking into the city.

Now for the not-so-good-things: the TV didn't feature german or english channels (except CNN), but 20 italian channels. Our room hadn't a bath, just a shower. And they don't offer inroom Internet-Access.

Avoid the Il-Cantina Restaurant, it doesnt make the impression to have a relaxed evening there (strange, expensive food, military-like staff)

June 2006- We only spent one night at the Certosa di Maggiano, but it was our favorite for setting, facilities, staff courteousness, and the restaurant there deserves at least one Michelin star compared to the two other one star Michelin restaurants we dined in. (One in Venice and one in Cortona) The food and presentation were divine, inspired, and the service was absolutely impeccable. We have eaten in some of the finest restaurants in New York, San Francisco, London, Paris, and Provence, and this one ranked right up there with the very best.
The views west over the hills towards Sienna were spectacular, and the setting was serene. A very complete breakfast was served in the garden. The staff seemed genuinely glad to see us and were immensely helpful with a booking problem due to our travel agency. Our room was large with a sitting room but pricey ($600 in hi season) but the bathroom was large with a jacuzzi tub, and the windows could be left open at night without bugs. The bell in the tower in the courtyard tolls at noon.
Our next trip will include 2 or 3 nights here!

This hotel has a seven star restaurant and chef ,a five star setting and gardens , but a three star service. Do your math. If this gives you a five star average , fine , but not for me. Except the breakfast maitre ( never had lunch there) , Salvatore, nobody else on the staff was too charming at what they do , which is to try to make your visit to this special hotel a memorable one.

A diamond in the Relais and Chateaux crown. Grand old monastery with charming and somewhat funky rooms. Extraordinary and underrated restaurant. Smooth, friendly service. Relaxing stay in the middle of a busy trip. Enjoyed breakfast in the garden each morning with the owner's westies. View from room across 500 year old buildings, vegetable gardens and the Duomo of Siena. Quiet and peaceful.

Stayed three nights in a suite with adjoining double for our daughters and property was very nice with interesting history as 14th century monastery. Rooms decorated nicely and staff is very helpful..
Restaurant tries to be too creative and exotic and does not offer classical Tuscan fare for which this area is famous. Would recommend more informal restaurants in Siena over the restaurant here.
Definitely, Ristorante La Logge in Siena is a must. Overall, a very nice place to stay but probably not worth the expense (e.g. 685 euro for a suite)
