We'd intended to visit this deli several times, but only plucked up enough courage on our
last evening in Siena. It is overwhelming - meats hanging everywhere, enthusiastic staff, quite claustrophobic interior. But it's worth it. We asked how it worked and were told to select a bottle of beer or wine that would be ours to drink on the premises and then we asked for a board of meat and cheese for two. We said we'd like something spicy if possible, and the guy behind the counter made a selection for us from the mind-boggling choice of meats and cheeses. They carried the board round, brought glasses and a small table over and we were set. The food is really high quality and it's a real experience to have a snack and drink in the shop. The aubergine pesto served with it was incredible. The board was around 17 euros - not bad at all. We asked for a taste of roast pork when we'd finished and the man brought us a large free plate of delicious meat. As we were leaving, he gave us a piece of pannaforte, biscuit and dessert wine shot on the house. A lovely way to end our holiday!

My husband and I walked by this store and saw other tourists standing right outside by the display window, eating cold cuts from a cutting board. We decided to try it. (FYI--We travelled a lot in many countries. Being obviously tourists, we always respect the locals and try to appeal to the better nature of people. We found that the locals we met typically wanted to show off their best. Occasionally we felled into tourist traps, but more often our approach worked out well for us.) We asked the person at the counter to pick out a bottle of wine and a small selection of local specialties for us. We got a cutting board of 4-5 different meats and 3-4 different cheeses, and some house condiments. It all looked fantastic!

And the tally...80+ Euros (ouch!) We were slightly shocked, but decided that we came to Tuscany for the experience. We settled at a spot in front of the store. The person brought the food out, helped us settle at a spot in front of the store, and said, "For the next hour or however long you eat, [gesturing to the ground we stood] THIS is a piece of Siena you paid for. This is yours now."

The wine was good, the people watching was great, and everything tasted unbelievably full of flavors and just simply delicious. To this day, I dream of the salsiccia cruda (raw sausage). We were content at this point, but that's not it...after about 20 minutes or so of happily drinking and eating, the staff came out and gave us some traditional bread that just came out of the oven. So we kept eating. Then came two slices of panforte and dessert wine (Vin Santo, I think)! Now this was above and beyond expectation.

So, was it expensive? Yes. Was it worth it? For us, absolutely. We've spent more in restaurants that left no significant impression. My suggestion is, if you have a budget to work with, skip a fancy dinner and spend the money on the right street food.

I love this place! If you are polite and friendly these people will treat you like family. The food is completely authentic and completely delicious and the hospitality was tremendous. We were welcomed in and then served a feast! It was the staff lunch break then, so they locked us in and we all ate together, just like family. No, we didn't order off a menu after considering the cost. If you want to pinch pennies on your trip you'd better go to a market or the nearest McDonald's. They asked us if we would like lunch and we accepted with gratitude what they prepared for us, just like family. This is the Italian way. They generously give you their best, and more if you are enjoying it. We experienced a similar service style in one of the best restaurants in Florence. Yes it may be a tad disconcerting at first, but the more you just relax into it, the more you'll enjoy everything. Antonio and Massimo were so jovial and giving; they turned up the music and kept filling our glasses and offering more delicious meats for us to try. This was an experience of a lifetime, one that I'll never forget. If you are lucky enough to enjoy a meal there, just go with the flow and have a beautiful experience. You won't regret it.
Ps. We did end up shipping a few things home, big black truffles, cheeses with truffles, and olive oil. Maybe expensive, but totally worth every penny. This will be the first place I return to if I'm ever in the area again. I love these guys!

We stumbled upon this deli. The owners were very helpful, really friendly and thoroughly amusing. We spent a good hour or so in there choosing our dinner for the evening. We came out a lot poorer but had such an amazing first dinner in our Tuscan villa with friends from Australia that it was well worth every penny. Oh and he bought out fresh from the oven still warm lemon biscotti for us to try, which we proceeded to purchase for dessert. Amazing place and well worth a visit.

People complaining it's expensive really do not know how to set apart fast food from real food. Just because a place serves finger food it does not mean you'll pay 3 bucks for it. At Miccoli's I found hand-made food (rustic hams and cheeses, like seasoned pecorino from Pienza), traditional dishes and some of the best wine from neighbor cities (Nobile, Brunello). BEST finger food ever, don't miss if you are in town.
