My partner and I stayed here for two nights and just loved the location (Siena and Tuscany in general is lovely and the views from the hotel courtyard are so picturesque...serenity!). Service from the lovely Reception staff is impeccable...if only we had this kind of service in Australia...and the sweet lady who manages the breakfast buffet in the morning makes outstanding coffee (just get the Italian-style with the frothed milk served separately...divine!). We booked a cheaper room on the ground level rather than paying the extra to go higher for a view...but we're very happy with our choice...the room is large, comfortably furnished in old-style/antiques; lovely windows and shutters that open out onto the courtyard so you can hear the birds sing and get a lovely breeze; there is a smallish flat-screen tv (couldn't find any English-speaking channels but didn't care as we weren't there to watch tv!); a very full mini-bar at very reasonable prices and a good-sized bathroom with a full bath, bidet separate to the toilet and heated towel-rails. Minor issues for us: no tea/coffee making facilities in the room and only a continental selection for breakfast (but the cold meats and cheeses selections and juices were good). These are the only reasons we aren't awarding Santa Caterina 5 stars. But please note, after two fairly disappointing stays at the Hampton by Hilton in Berlin and the Hilton Garden Inn in Mestre, it was a delight to stay in a homey, old-worldly place with character and soul and with such lovely, honest and attentive people. If we come back to Siena, we will want to stay here again.

We were here with our family for only one short night but this was certainly a fine hotel choice with very friendly and knowledgeable staff. The public areas like the breakfast room and adjoining sitting room were lovely. Our group consisted of 7 people with 3 rooms. Very nice breakfast. Bus stop just a few steps away if you don't want to take the 15 minute walk to the city center. If you read my other hotel reviews for our recent Italy trip you might think I grade to easily since most are high but I was amazed with the quality of our hotel choices. We have been to many places in Europe over the years and had mostly decent to good rooms but all of our hotels this trip were very good to excellent. Heartily recommended!

This hotel is just outside the city walls but easily within walking distance of all the major sites of Sienna.
A great alternative to other pricier hotels within the city walls. The rooms are more than adequate and the hotel has a small delightful outside dining courtyard. However, I will warn travelers that the hotel is at a fairly busy intersection which can be noisy until all the commuters have arrived home...about 10pm. Then it starts again about 7AM.
Staff and breakfast included are all delightful and the staff very helpful.

We stayed here in July 2011 for four nights. Used Siena as a Tuscan basis. The property is a short ten minutes walk to the Campo in Siena, yet is ideally outside the gates for an easy drive for day trips to Montalcino, Montepulciano, etc. breakfast was always in the garden, and we picnicked a couple of dinners there also. But the staff was unbelievably helpful, ever present, never a wait, and any request was eagerly and quickly met by whomever I spoke with. Definitely our home when we return!!!!

If you need good service, great location and value, Hotel Santa Caterina is a place to look at for your first or next visit to Siena. We stayed for 2 nights and it provided a perfect location for accessing central Siena. The room we had was at the back of the hotel, having a lovely panoramic view. It was a mezzanine room, which could be a challenge for those less mobile, but was great for us...just a little different from the norm. Free wifi is always welcomed and the breakfast was lovely. Main challenge was the parking...be mindful of this as there is restricted parking but the staff are exceptionally helpful in supporting parking issues. Also try La Sosta di Violante for dinner via Pantaneto 115 (just through Porta Romana on right had side on way into central Siena)

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back as this has a panoramic view

I have to admit that we stayed very recently at an amazing hotel in Paris, so our standards were a bit higher than usual when we arrived at Hotel Santa Caterina for the weekend of New Years. We had reserved parking but could not find where to go, so we parked on the curb in front of the hotel, which is a very busy spot. The hotel staff were friendly and assisted us in parking.

The room we got was large with high ceilings and overlooked the gardens, which was a nice view. The bed was comfortable but the fabrics on the chairs and bed was kind of worn-looking. We liked the breakfast but the meats were not the best, overall it's a filling breakfast and can't complain as it's free. The bathroom was a good size, with a small shower but this is normal for Italy, it wasn't the smallest we have seen by a long shot.

The first problem was that I found a small bug on my pillow when I was reading late at night. This was not a fun experience, as I found myself searching the room to make sure it was the only one and that resulted in a poor night's sleep. (Note: I did not see any for the rest of our time at the hotel). The second issue came with the smoke alarm, which is directly above the bed, and it has two red lights that flash ALL NIGHT LONG. This was kind of annoying and interrupted our sleep. The walls are also not thick so we heard our upstairs neighbors on many occasions (again, this is not uncommon for Italy).

Another issue came when we had a late morning and the cleaning staff came into the room while I was getting dressed, I just managed to shut the bathroom door in time. She did not knock and this was not a great experience. We talked to the front desk and he agreed to talk to the staff to ensure they do not enter the rooms unless we were gone and had passed in our keys.

And last but not least, the room we had was VERY HOT all the time. We had to have the window open most of our stay, and it was late December! We spoke to the front desk after the first uncomfortable night and he showed us how to turn off the thermostat, but this did not fix the problem and the room remained much too hot the entire stay. The floor next to my suit case was hot... I have no idea why this was!

The location was convenient, a 10 minute walk to the main piazza, which was very nice. As I already said, the bed was very comfortable. The staff were friendly, except the one who walked in on me mostly naked. We were not overall impressed unfortunately, even though they were nice enough to give us all the mini bar items we used for free. I was disappointed that we paid more than our original budget because it was a busy time of year, yet our hotel was just average in the end.

I think the main draw of this hotel is the location and the garden, which is unfortunately not as useful in the winter months as it is too cold to enjoy breakfast outside.

Room Tip: We liked having the garden view

A warm, caring staff and clean, comfortable rooms....that's why my husband and I have stayed here three times on our visits to Siena and we will again. Great location and great value.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back have great views of the garden and the countryside beyond.
