“Bellissimo Borgo Grondaie! Serene, peaceful Hotel just outside Siena Walls. Family loved it!”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

The Borgo Grondaie was spectacular! We arrived after a very long day coming up from the south by train and then renting a car in Florence and avoiding ZTL's to get out of town on the way to Siena. We came via the road through Greve in Chianti and it was lovely.

Pulling up to the Borgo we met Wolfgang to check in and were given all the info and our wifi password - and given the key to our room - the apartment Terrazza 1. We were allowed to drive up the little gravel drive right next to our apartment to unload our luggage. The Terrazza 1 was very close to the pool and we had a fantastic and spacious terrace with lovely sunset views and views towards Siena - you could just see the top of the striped Cathedral Tower along the ridge line of Siena - as well as the Convento di San Francisco - a huge and beautiful convent building - and above where we would park and ride the escalators up into town each day/evening.

The pool was exquisite - the kids (and we) had a blast! I had told them that we didn't have a pool - and when we drove up in the golden light of the late afternoon - they went ballistic with joy at seeing the pool and grounds and our apartment - all very lovely. The pool was never deserted nor crowded. We enjoyed our apartment kitchen and fridge - and the easy access to the very large and value priced Coop - grocery super store just down the hill from the Borgo - easy to stock up on vino/birra/fermaggio/croissants/panne, etc.. We used the Borgo laundry - which was welcome - and only paid to wash - using the August Tuscan sun to dry our clothes on the provided drying lines/racks.

Breakfast was not included for us in the apartment - but the kids enjoyed in for one morning - very nice.

This was just a perfect location with a taste of a Tuscan country setting - but walkable or very closely drivable into Siena. Fantastico. No hint of any objectionable noises or views from the rail yard that was evidently at the bottom of the hill - never really saw it or heard it.

Gaia was an absolute pleasure when we needed a little assistance with anything, as was Wolfgang. The apartment was spacious, well appointed and clean -and we just had to clean it up at the end which wasn't a big deal, since daily cleaning wasn't included but that was fine.

If you're going to Siena - particularly if you have a car - go and stay at the Borgo Grondaie - a wonderful value for the beautiful grounds, pool, views, friendly staff and very reasonable rates for what it offered. Grazie a tutto! Ciao.

Room Tip: The Terrazza 1 - at the top of the little drive - closest to the swimming pool is an outstanding loc...

We stayed at the hotel / apartments in August - ourselves and another couple each had an apartment / suite. Very clean and the people most friendly.
The location to the Siena walls was adequate (a 5E taxi ride) or for fit walkers. (Hikers) the grounds, pool area and facilities among the best we have stayed in.
The value was very good for what you received particularly during peak tourist season (it was the weekend of the horse races)

Room Tip: The suites very so ensure you ask for a larger one.

As we approached Borgo Grondaie we could see that this was somewhere special and indeed it is. The staff are charming and helpful, our room was well appointed, comfortable and peaceful. The outside seating and courtyard areas of Borgo Grondaie were a delight as was the breakfast. The swimming pool has wonderful views of Siena without the crowds. One tip if you want to walk to Siena from the Borgo is to go to the train station and the shopping centre behind it and take the escalator up to the town. It will save you the walk up the hill.

My family and I began our 5 night sojourn after our very professional driver (arranged by the hotel) delivered us from the Florence airport. The Chiesino apartment was a comfortable home (with quiet, cool air conditioning) for us while we gradually let the food, wine and magic of Siena be an important part of our lives. The Palio is a remarkable tradition ... so much passion exhibited by the Sienese ... we were able to observe two rehearsals which led up to the event. The Duomo di Siena is truly inspirational! While at Borgo Grondaie ... Gaia, Amina, Wolfgang & Chan were totally dedicated to providing the very best care & attention to our family ... and we thank them for that. The beautiful & peaceful grounds and pool area were absolutely perfect for our relaxing afternoons. An extremely well-run establishment .... we highly recommend the Borgo Grondaie!

My husband, myself and our 13 year old son stayed here in June while traveling all over Italy. We all agreed that this was one of our favorite accommodations and we LOVED Siena!! We stayed in the two bedroom villa- Cipresso and had tons of room! We really enjoyed the gorgeous gardens and pool. The walk into town was about 15-20 minutes but not very hard if you use the escalators that take you from the train station to the top of the hill. Everything was very clean and the breakfast served in the main lobby was great!

We were two couples visiting the Palio; one wanted a villa in the countryside and we wanted to be near the city and its restaurants; Borgo Grondaie fitted the bill exactly.

We had the "Villa" with two en-suite double rooms and a common kitchen/dining/ seating area. Outside we had essentially a private terrace with table and chairs. We chose to walk the 200 yards to the large Co-op supermarket for bread each morning and it was a short walk into the town centre. The residence has an extensive garden with a good size pool.

The staff were extremely helpful and attentive, and the broadband was fast and free.

So what were the negatives? Very few: The people upstairs walking with hard shoes on a tiled floor, the background noise of the diesel engines in the rail siding below during the day, the fact that in an apartment for 4 the coffee maker would only do 2 cups at a time, the poolside chairs that aren't comfortable if you want to read a book.

Will we go back? Probably.

We stayed here for 3 night is early June and thouroughly enjoyed our stay. Its location is great for Siena ( you do need a car though) and the Southern parts of Chianti Country.
Its a nice clean hotel with both private hotel style rooms and more reasonable apartment rooms.
Rooms are nicely appointed , bathrooms a tad small maybe and the rooms are a bit dark.
Rooms are airconditioned (Which was very cold!) but we like to open the window in the morning ...this was not so wise as below all the woods is the Station .. which was pretty noisy on Occasion.
Breakfast was lovely .. especially if there was a table free on the terrace . Fresh fruits, cold meats and cereals available ( some hot bacon and eggs might be nice occasionally ?)
But hard to fault.
No lunch nor evening meals were available which meant you had to go out and you really have to drive to do that , which is a shame as its a hassle !It would have been lovely to have been able to eat in at least once (even if we'd pre-ordered everything)
The approach past the supermarket is not especially welcoming - but you can't change that.
Once your inside the grounds its nice.
Good Pool area- well away from the hotel and sleeping rooms
Nice and quite large gardens - on a slope so not hugely useable - but nice for a meander
On reflection I think 2 nights here would have been great ... 3 was too long.

Room Tip: Rooms Facing in to the Courtyard might be quieter if you want open the windows .Rooms on the lower f...
