The Borgo Grondaie was spectacular! We arrived after a very long day coming up from the south by train and then renting a car in Florence and avoiding ZTL's to get out of town on the way to Siena. We came via the road through Greve in Chianti and it was lovely.
Pulling up to the Borgo we met Wolfgang to check in and were given all the info and our wifi password - and given the key to our room - the apartment Terrazza 1. We were allowed to drive up the little gravel drive right next to our apartment to unload our luggage. The Terrazza 1 was very close to the pool and we had a fantastic and spacious terrace with lovely sunset views and views towards Siena - you could just see the top of the striped Cathedral Tower along the ridge line of Siena - as well as the Convento di San Francisco - a huge and beautiful convent building - and above where we would park and ride the escalators up into town each day/evening.
The pool was exquisite - the kids (and we) had a blast! I had told them that we didn't have a pool - and when we drove up in the golden light of the late afternoon - they went ballistic with joy at seeing the pool and grounds and our apartment - all very lovely. The pool was never deserted nor crowded. We enjoyed our apartment kitchen and fridge - and the easy access to the very large and value priced Coop - grocery super store just down the hill from the Borgo - easy to stock up on vino/birra/fermaggio/croissants/panne, etc.. We used the Borgo laundry - which was welcome - and only paid to wash - using the August Tuscan sun to dry our clothes on the provided drying lines/racks.
Breakfast was not included for us in the apartment - but the kids enjoyed in for one morning - very nice.
This was just a perfect location with a taste of a Tuscan country setting - but walkable or very closely drivable into Siena. Fantastico. No hint of any objectionable noises or views from the rail yard that was evidently at the bottom of the hill - never really saw it or heard it.
Gaia was an absolute pleasure when we needed a little assistance with anything, as was Wolfgang. The apartment was spacious, well appointed and clean -and we just had to clean it up at the end which wasn't a big deal, since daily cleaning wasn't included but that was fine.
If you're going to Siena - particularly if you have a car - go and stay at the Borgo Grondaie - a wonderful value for the beautiful grounds, pool, views, friendly staff and very reasonable rates for what it offered. Grazie a tutto! Ciao.
