Thought we would try Porta Romana again after two nights stay in 2011. By coincidence? we ended up with same small room in the annex to main building. Having read other reports this may be a good thing as no noise problems. The bad smell we encountered last year was not in evidence. In my opinion the best things about hotel are car parking and position overlooking Tuscan hills.
May have been unlucky again with breakfasts. Other reviewers rate it as good but I found it off putting that food was brought out almost on demand and in mean fashion. One always seemed to be picking up remains and leftovers. Putting that aside there is no excuse in Italy for stale bread. I will be charitable and say it was from day before but was dry enough to be two days old.
There is a sort of meanness about what is on offer, hard to explain but can be summed up by open air jacuzzi that was pointed out on arrival. It costs 10 euros each to use, an unexpected extra charge in a hotel that is not cheap. needless to say we did not see it in use during our three day stay.
Wifi did not extend to our room so had to sit in reception/breakfast room or outside.

Arrived by car so was easy to find with free parking. About a 5 minute walk to the Porta Romana gate to the city but a further long walk to the main square. Great views across the Tuscan countryside from the room but it was SO small. Tight squeeze to get bags past the end of the bed. Bathroom clean and spacious. Breakfast was served in the garden and the weather was cold so it was quite unpleasant. Noise from neighboring rooms a bit annoying. Good value hotel but only one expensive restaurant close by if you don't want to walk all the way back to the main square of Siena.

Room Tip: Room with a view.

A good value for money hotel within walking distance to the main square. The room was clean but did not have airconditioning. Reccomend you ask for a room with a view. Staff were very helpful and they have a lovely terrace that you can sit and relax at. Great breakfast with lovely home-made fruit salad and cakes.

We recently stayed here two nights. We didn't have a view of the Tuscan countryside from our room, but just outside our building was a little look-out area from which we had the most heavenly view imaginable. That was by far the best thing about the hotel. The big downside was that we heard the noise from the rooms on both sides, and the tromping noise from the room above was horrible. I was at the complete mercy of other people, even with earplugs in, as to when I'd be able to get to sleep. Other aspects of the hotel were positive or neutral: helpful staff, good breakfast buffet, pleasant 15- or 20-minute walk from the heart of town, quirky shower. If noise doesn't bother you when trying to go to sleep, and you want a heart-melting view of the famed Tuscan countryside without having to drive around to see it, this is your place in Siena. We didn't have a car and we didn't miss having one, once we got to the hotel. From the train station, it's too far to walk to this hotel. There's a city bus you can take.

Room Tip: Get a room on the top floor to minimize the noise problem.

Should you arrive by Siena in a car and want to avoid paying steep and accruing overnight parking charges in the city center, the Porta Romana hotel is worth considering.

The hotel is well-situated (for fit people who enjoy walking) outside of the city center. The views are outstanding. The grounds, too, are lush and well-attended. The staff is lovely and attentive.

The breakfast spread was solid and customary--yoghurts, fruit, cheeses, baked goods, sliced meat, bread, coffee to order.

Our room was not, however, up to the standard of the rest of this hotel. It was cramped and felt like a tiny camp bunk room--replete with wood paneling up half the walls, and cheesy furniture. While fully functional, the bathroom felt more like the bathroom you'd find on a sailing vessel than in a hotel with this cost.

Peering in at other rooms during cleaning times, though; it does look like many of the others are far superior. Luck of the draw? Late booking?

Room Tip: Looked like the ground-level rooms were the largest.

This lovely little hotel has spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside, is welcoming and comfortable. Yes, our room was a bit small, as was expected in Italy, but it was comfortable with shuttered windows that opened and overlooked the olive trees and hills. Breakfast was served in a lovely garden-coffee, fresh juices, meats & cheeses, breads, yogurt, cereal, etc. The staff were attentive, friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is outside the city walls, about 0.5-1 mile from the city center (mostly uphill, not bad though-actually a pleasant walk). Although there was a small charge for it's use, there is a hot tub on the premises, which was perfect in the afternoon after our Chianti wine tour all day (!). This hotel was a pleasant surprise to us and we are glad we stayed there.

Room Tip: FYI -most of the rooms have Tuscan hillside views, but not all. -no elevator, three floors -firs...
