“A wonderful place to stay”
Reviewed 22 July 2009

This is a delightful budget hotel (we paid only E65-75 through venere.com). The rooms are a nice size with a little extra space to spread out or do yoga. Although located on a busy road, the rooms are away from the road and look over the Tuscan countryside. There is plenty of parking. The bathrooms are large and the towels are comfortable. Breakfast is served in a little garden and the staff are very accommodating. It is a little walk to the center of Siena but we didn't mind it. They have a little terrace with some umbrellas to sit out and rest during the day. Lovely place and great value!

We found this hotel through Rick Steve's book. It is perfectly located about a 15 minute walk to the centre of Sienna. It is about 300m outside the Porta Romana, has an easily read sign and plenty of off street parking. Our room was ground floor, very spacious, with a huge bathroom and looked newly renovated. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the breakfast was the usual continental style and plentiful. There was free internet available through reception. We would stay here again as access with a car was so easy. The view was lovely down a valley with fruit trees etc and it was quiet.

I will describe the positives and the negatives.
Positives: Good location (outside from the wall of Porta Romana, 15 minutes walking), Great view from your room (it is better to specifically ask for view on your booking requests), Satisfactory breakfast, Clean rooms, Free parking

Negatives: Small rooms, small bathrooms, Not so good accoustic (we could hear everything from the beside rooms!)

We paid 80 euros a night for this hotel. Below are the positive and negative things about it:

Positive aspects

- Excellent location. Just outside the walls of Siena
- Free car park
- large spacious room
- Nice staff
- There's a nice sitting area outside with a view of the Tuscan landscape

Negative aspects

- The hotel sells itself on the views it can offer. Unfortunately the view we had was of a courtyard with lots of cars. We obviously weren't warned about this. We did ask if we could be moved but unfortunately they were fully booked. I think the room we were given shouldn't have been made into a hotel room because it is unfair on guests who are expecting to have a view of the beautiful tuscan landscape. This was my biggest disappointment with this hotel. Furthermore, the windows didn't have any netting so people could look in. So I would advise you get information about the type of room you will be staying in

- The breakfast was nice but quite limited in choice

- Bring your own bathroom supplies as again these are quite limited

What a disappointment. The location is very good – the only place I could find with a car park but also within walking distance of the city of Siena, so you don't have to worry about driving in and finding parking or getting the bus. The other review here talks about the wonderful views from the rooms, but the view from our room was ... of a car park. OK, it was a small, private car park, but it was on ground level and people could see into the room from the outside (there aren't even any net curtains, just normal curtains and shutters), and the room was very cold and gloomy. There is a really nice sitting area where breakfast is apparently served in summer, which can also be used in the day, and that is the view that SOME of the rooms have. The problem is you have no way of knowing which room you're getting if you book on the internet, so if you want to book here I'd do it directly with the hotel and check what room you're getting.

We wanted to have an authentic feel of being in the country during out visit to Tuscany/Siena ,and that is exactly what we got from our stay in this hotel. The rooms are basic and clean, but the best part is the amazing view! I loved waking up and seeing the country side in the morning. The hotel location is outside of the walls of Siena, but there is a very convenient bus just a short walk from the hotel that takes you into the city center. The front desk also sells bus tickets, but you might want to stock up because sometimes they run out specially at night. You can also choose to walk into the center, which we did one night and it was about a 15-20 minute, but very enjoyable walk. Siena is just amazing at night. We also chose this hotel because they offer free, safe parking. The staff even offered to let us leave the car for a few days if we wanted to tour around the area. We also received a great deal on our stay by paying cash ( the hotel offers 10% discount for cash payment). All in all, we enjoyed our stay in Hotel Porta Romana and are glad that we chose this hotel. We fell in love with this charming town and would definitely return again!

We made a reservation for the Piccolo Hotel Oliveta back in February. We knew it was a holiday weekend in Italy, so we wanted to plan ahead. This was a special celebration for us. The owners went out of their way making our arrangements, planning a wine tour, dinner reservations, etc. Imagine our shock and disappointment to arrive in Siena and finding the hotel closed! We talked with nearby shop owners who told us of the 'marital difficulties' between the owners. Since it was Liberation Day weekend, there were no hotel rooms available in Siena. We ended up out in the suburbs, with no transportation, having to pay for taxis to take us to/from Siena. I had been in touch with the owners just two weeks prior to our arrival and of course, nothing was mentioned about potentially being closed.
