Santa Chiara is at the opposite end of Assisi from the Basilica of San Francesco and what bookends they make for each other just as they did when they were alive . Santa Chiara's church is truly reflective of St Francis, simple with few decorations to distract you from the altar and God. The light coming in through the stained glass windows in the afternoon light made the altar radiant. Downstairs you can visit the tomb and view items of clothing from her life . Upstairs a lovely sister will accept your offering for masses for loved ones, entering the name in a lovely hand in a ledger book. While the church receives a large number of visitors it is much more peaceful and allows for quiet prayer and reflection of a life that left the secular world for contemplation and good works in the name of God.

After visiting San Francesco, went to Santa Chiara and the church was totally different. Some beautiful stain glass windows, very peaceful

Outside Piazza has beautiful views over Umbria. Inside contains the remains of St. Clare, the original St. Francis/San Damiano Crucifix. The church is rather plain. But hey, St. Clare and St. Francis lived the life of simplicity - so don't expect glamour here. A must-see for fans of Clare and Francis.

The word that always comes to mind when thinking of my visit is peace. A sense of calm and peace is what I felt as I walked the aisle and said a prayer. A visit to Assisi isn't complete without spending time here. You will leave with a sense of wonder and reverence. Don't miss this simple, beautiful piazza and church!

Even though this was built after Clare's death, her spirit filled this Basilica. The original icon from San Damiano where St. Francis was praying when he received God's call to "build my church" is housed here at Santa Chiara. It is very powerful and moving. We returned a 2nd day to sit and pray.
