“Truly amazing...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2014

We almost missed this amazing place ( it is more than a church or a Bascilica) but the geocachers on our trip just happened upon it. The church itself is a bit extravagant, but the original church of St Francis himself is easily contained within the Bascilica itself. Spend some time within and you will be moved.

But wait...there's more!
Attached to the Bascilica is another structure that houses the tiny cell where Francis died. And don't miss the lovely statue of St Francis with the live doves that surround it. At first I thought they were statues, but then one softly ruffled his feathers. It brought tears to my eyes.

The book store/ shop is worth a visit and you can find all things St Francis from the sublime to the (almost) ridiculous. And when you exit the shop, take note if the modern sculpture of St Francis. It can only be described as playful.

Overall, this is a highlight of the area.

“Truly spiritual”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 July 2014

St. Francis' first church is contained within this church. Participated in a mass in this small church. An amazing feeling to have taken communion in the church were St. Francis' once did the same thing. The church is beautifully preserved though the facade was altered from the original. It is a bit ornately and takes something away from the simplicity of the rest of the church.

“An incredible experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2014

This is where St. Francis lived, worked and died. It is a huge building, overshadowing the area, while the Basilica of St. Francis and Assisi is on the hill above.
There are ornate chapels with the Basilica and a quiet, serene feeling throughout. There is a wonderful gift shop, complete with items made bt the resident monks.
The site of St. Francis' death is humble and inspiring, and don't miss the rose garden. Blessed.

The grandeur of the of the church contrasted with the beautiful simplicity of the Porzincuola will be in your memory forever.
