Worth the drive and the walk, such a place of solitude. Make the effort and share in the tranquility.

This place is well worth a taxi ride or hike!
I so admire St. Francis' determination to honor God in
prayer and lifestyle.
It makes one appreciate how he inspired sincerity.

After a challenging uphill hike from Assisi (ca. 90 minutes, give or take), with gorgeous vistas over the Umbrian hill country, wildflowers, braying donkeys (!), and meadows and pastures full of beautiful grasses, you reach the Eremo delle Carceri, a hermitage on the side of Mount Subasio, to which St. Francis and his followers often repaired for retreat and prayer. (You can visit his cell there, along with seeing some quaint frescoes of a date later than the Saint's lifetime.) There are beautiful mountain views, and a charming contemporary sculpture group by Fiorenzo Bacci, near where St. Francis preached to the birds. The sculptures depict a recumbent St. Francis, who lies stretched out on the ground, legs crossed and arms behind his head, as he contemplates the stars, while his two companions, Brother Leo and Brother Juniper, attempt to record their observations of the constellations. On your walk back to town, you can stop at a great posto di ristoro (wonderful wines and delicious desserts), with outdoor tables that also afford beautiful views. --- This is a wonderful outing in every way.

It is the place were Francesco used to retire to meditate.
Is situated few kms. up on the hill, from the town of Assisi. We went by car (arrived in a few minutes).
Eremo is in the middle of the woods, with beautiful views of Umbria valley and is an special and incredibly peaceful place.
It has a chapel, some rooms (for priests), woods with special places were Francesco met nature, peace and .. God

At the Hermitage there are three chapels summarising Francis' journey into silence. Spend time at his grotto and feel the spirit of peace. There are some wonderful walks and grottoes for some of St Francis' brothers around the building. Beautiful birds and trees to help you transcend into silence.
Ask people making noise to respect the silence as there were a few noisy groups on the day I went who broke the spell.
