“No mystery why St. Francis came here for solitude”
Reviewed 26 October 2013

Perched on the side of Mt. Subasio high about Assisi is The Hermitage. It was here that Francis and his followers retreated to bring themselves closer to spirit.

If you chose to hike up be aware that the trail is very challenging especially if it's been raining. It is steep and very rocky but a beautiful sojourn. You can also walk up the road, although the taxi and bus traffic would make it rather stressful.

The Hermitage is very old, very sacred and should be experienced by walking respectfully and silently. Wander the hillside after touring the Monastary and enjoy the trails with wild cyclamen, mushrooms and ancient oak and holly trees. There are outdoor chapels where Francis preached to his followers, valley views and the opportunity to sit in total silence and mediate on all that Francis stands for - consideration of others, peace and goodwill. Another site similar to Eremo Delle Carceri to visit would be the Sanctuary of La Verna (an hour and half drive north of Assisi), another of Francis' hermitages. Both sites will send you back into the World more centered and peaceful.

As with all sacred sites, visitors are requested to be respectful, not take photos inside the Monastery and to be silent.

“We went into 15 countries and this is no. 1 on our list”
Reviewed 22 October 2013

Eremo delle Carceri also known as St. Francis's hermitage. WE walked into the area through a lovely little archway Then we walked into the beautiful old building and down into a very steep winding steps dark and so narrow into the original cave where St. Francis retreated from time to time; it measures maybe 3 meters on a side, if that. He slept in a niche in the bare rock, just barely visible .

it's a nice hike up the mountain from the town of Assisi (2.7 miles). bring water and a camera! we taxi'd back down (there is a rank, no need to book). you can see where St Francis slept in the tiny monastery rooms

“Utterly charming - and worth seeking out”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

We were so glad we made the detour to find this charming, tucked-away little hermitage. Luckily a coach party was leaving as we arrived, and we were able to enjoy the peace and beauty of the woodland setting. Though not religious at all, we found the little bed of St Francis very touching - and loved the bronze statue of him in the woods, lying on his back looking at the stars. Worth seeking out

“Well worth the time to see the place where St. Francis Meditated!”
Reviewed 26 September 2013

High above the city where Francis went for quiet time to pray and meditate. Quiet, breezy and remote. Walk the trails, visit the absolutely beautiful chapel and just sense what this place could have been like 750 years ago. And just realize where you are standing. Although many people visit the Carcere, it's not as busy as the rest of Assisi... a refreshing departure from the crowds at the Basilica.
