Owner description: The retreat high in the mountains above Assisi where St. Francis frequently stayed to meditate and pray.

This small ancient hermitage is a fantastic place for a believer to pray in a mystic and very spiritual context and it is at the same time a very interesting place to visit for everyone. I am not religious but the visit to the cave of St Francis is really worth the walk, and if you don't feel like walking you can drive up there as well. Walking along the path in the woods and discovering the sites of prayer in this little quiet corner of central Italy is a great experience! It would be very nice of the friars who run the place to welcome pets as well...

Beautiful, tranquil location high above Assisi. Possible to hike to but I prefer a taxi up and to walk down. Small chapel for "silent prayer only," is carved out of rock of Mount Subasio. Visit the tomb of St. Francis but don't miss out on the many small grottos off the beaten path. Wear good hiking shoes and climb down the small paths to small grottos filled with prayers tucked in cracks and crevices from those before you. Or climb uphill to search for the same and quiet meditation. At times small groups may be celebrating mass in the woods, or singing quiet hymns. I find this to be a very spiritual place and love leaving the hustle and bustle behind. Please be respectful and walk or hike quietly. There are some phenomenal views to be had on a clear day.

Just outside and to the left of the Porta Cappuccini one can find the #50 trailhead (red and while stripes) for the grotto of St Francis. Bring water. Gradual at first along a dirt road, it steepens and becomes a trail. Flattens nicely prior to arrival at the grotto. Takes just over an hour to get there. Very tranquil. Great place to reflect. Walk back is much faster. If you have a car, there is of course road access.

If you need to go and meditate and or think about something, this would be the place. There's not much to see here, it's more about the calmness and getting away from it all.

We walked up to this hermitage from Assisi and the walk made the experience even better. It was on a switch back road but had lots of short cuts. It took about 40 minutes and was uphill the whole way. When you got to the top, you got the quiet treat of a view an quaint little church honoring St Francis. You could see his little isolated cave and hike to similar caves on site. You can get a tour from an actual Franciscan monk and I was bummed we had not done this. So, make the call and arrange for a guide. But even if you don't, I highly recommend a visit because it will make you love St Francis even more than Assisi does.
