We choose this hotel because of the excellent rating here and in booking.com. And we expected more... We had some problems. The chair in our room was impossible to be used because it was broken!!! The computer in the lobby was broken too! The bed creaked and I'm 56 kilos! We spend 3 nights there and we had the impression that once a week some articles are provided for breakfast and when something is gone not replacement is provided! In the breakfast, many choices of tea and marmalade, one cake and one pie, some muesli, yogurt, water, biscuits, cheese, salami (not good quality). Not fruits, vegetables or eggs for a normal breakfast. The location is in the middle of Assisi (a charming religious town when bells ring at 7am the first one and at 22:45pm the last ones!). Some steps lead to La Fortezza, for us this not was an inconvenient, but it can be. This is explicit in the hotel presentation, so, no problem. In the hotel's site is written that you can use the computer (it's absolutely broken- month November 2013), is written that in price are included transport tickets for public transport! That's not true. We ask the manager, no tickets!
I write all this because small things give a little negative impression. There are good things too. Clean room and clean hotel. Amazing roof view. Charming staff. Rooms with flower name, hot water in bathroom. Every day change of towels (they are very thin). Umbrellas provided for free in rainy days. Assisi maps, Assisi card with restaurants discount (5-10%) provided too. An Assisi book with all kind of information provided for the days of stay.
That's why my impression is negative and positive. I'm not sure that I will choose the same hotel in an other trip to the beautiful Assisi.

Room Tip: Rosa room is in the first floor if you can't use steep easily.

We came to Assisi for the Internation Clarinet Festival held in July 2013. We booked on line months before and chose this hotel because it is part of a 14th Century fortress. It appealed to our romantic notion of being surrounded by history and culture instead of a modern hotel. We were not disappointed. After being dropped off at the top of Assisi by bus which we caught from the train station below, we walked down narrow cobbled streets winding like a labyrinth to the Piazza del Commune. We then climbed 76 wide steps to our hotel. There are ramps either side of the steps for our suitcases. We were greeted by the friendly staff and shown to our very small but perfectly clean and compact room. We had our own bathroom with bidet and shower. There is no air con but the overhead fan was very comfortable while sleeping even in the summer. The highlight of our stay at La Fortezza was breakfast. We were treated to a full Italian/western style breakfast of cereals, juices, bread rolls, meats, cheeses, pastries, jam tarts, cakes and platters of fruit. The coffee was superb and we even had decaf. English breakfast tea and herbal teas were available as well. The view from the balcony is breathtaking. We looked over 500 year old houses and churches and beyond to the valley below and the mountains beyond. At night time it is a litany of light, sparkling in the distance. Our rooms were cleaned daily with fresh towels, soap etc. We were very happy with our stay and would definitely come back again. Stefano is an excellent host and nothing was too much trouble for him when we needed information and directions.

Room Tip: Beware of the climb you have with heavy suitcases if you are not fit. No wheelchair access or eleva...

We spen2 nights and it could not have been better. Stephano was the perfect host. This 7 room hotel with nicely furnished and spotless rooms and free WiFi is located just up a pedestrian walkway, with steps, from the Piazza del Comune - the main city square. Next to the breakfast area, there is a rooftop deck that looks over the rooftops of Assisi perfect for breakfast or a glass of wine in the evening. There was always tea and coffee, along with fresh pastries available at the breakfast area.

Stephano provided a free to use audio guide for a walking tour of Assisi, along with maps, and suggestions for our stay. We arrived just before the high season and parking is included. Stephano parked the car in their private lot (5 min)and when we left he took our luggage to the car and brought it to the square where we continued our journey.

The family also owns the La Pallotta hotel close by and the Restaurant Pallotta Fortenza Trattoria just across the main square. Both are recommended by Rick Steve’s and Lonely Planet. Highly recommended

Room Tip: Call Stephano at 075-812-307 and he will meet you, take care of your car , and check you in.

Great central location, quiet room, terrific breakfast and tea in the afternoon. I was in Italy for three weeks and this was my favorite hotel. Stayed here three nights as a middle aged woman travelling alone.

My third stay here and equally happy as with the first. A real home-away from home atmosphere located in the perfect location in the real centre of historic Assisi. Steps away from all that counts. You will be warmly welcomed by owner Stefano and looked after at breakfast by Jenny. Rooms are well appointed, clean, quiet. Free WiFi, the best breakfast. You can't go wrong. Highly recommended.

I found La Fortezza on Tripadvisor where I saw that you should call the hotel for pick up from the train station. I also saw there were lots and lots of steps to this location. We called the hotel, they sent a taxi and the driver carried our bags directly to the hotel. This was much appreciated and a great tip from tripadvisor. We found the hotel was in a great location with a nice square just down the steps with lots of restaurants. We enjoyed having a drink at the outdoor tables. You can enjoy shopping or just sitting and relaxing very close to the hotel. The hotel had a very nice breakfast with an outdoor terrace. There was only someone at the front desk when we arrived and departed. Rooms were clean and quiet. You will love their location.

Room Tip: Call a taxi for pick up from train station. Too many steps to carry your luggage up or down.
