If you love Giotto's painting, then this Basilica is a must see.
There are also many works by other notable artists within the church.

This cathedral is lovely from the outside. But it feels more like a museum inside than a place of reverence. If you want to experience the peace of St. Francis I recommend the church in the valley, Mary of the angels.

The basilica is very old and very beautiful. There is a genuine feeling of holiness as you sit in prayer. The artwork is beautiful and the scenery surrounding is breathtaking.

The basilica is actually two separate churches, a lower and an upper. I liked the detail of the exterior of the rose windows. We would first go into the lower church. There were signs stating that photos were not allowed. I was in good company breaking the law, although there were docents making regular announcements that photos weren’t allowed and shaking their fingers at violators. I normally try to comply when photos aren’t allowed; but this church was too amazing and important not to take a few photos to remember it by. The lower church was so beautiful with fresco covered vaulted ceilings. Just amazing and gorgeous!

In the middle of the nave, is a double stairway entrance to the crypt, where the remains of St. Francis are contained in a stone coffin. I walked back up to the main floor and took some photos of the side chapels and beautiful stained-glass windows. This was some amazing place. I was just loving Assisi and the day had only just begun.

After visiting some other parts of town, I headed for the entrance to the upper church. Assisi suffered a 5.5 and 6.1 earthquake in 1997 that did a lot of damage to the buildings in Assisi. The basilica was severely damaged and some of the frescos totally destroyed. I remember when it happened seeing the video of part of the vaulted ceiling falling down and killing a couple of people. It was so horrible. For years I have remembered seeing the video and wondering if they were able to restore the upper church. They certainly did! It is amazing how this ancient building has been restored. It is just gorgeous. They weren’t able to replace some of the frescos at the front of the church where the ceilings are decorated in an aqua color. But the rest looks amazing.
