As you walk through the beautiful streets of Assisi, admiring and taking photos of all the colourful flowers that festoon every balcony, it's easy to get distracted. We decided to make a beeline for the Basilica di San Francesco first though, and got there at about 09:00 (it opens at 08:30), and we were so glad that we did as it was very quiet - everyone else must've been admiring those flowers. It was heaving by 10:00 though, so our recommendation is definitely to get up early!
There is a lot to see, and the frescos are stunning. The ones of the life of Saint Francis, painted by Giotto are especially interesting.
Given that entry is free, this is a fabulous way to start your day, before finding somewhere later for that expresso!
