As you walk through the beautiful streets of Assisi, admiring and taking photos of all the colourful flowers that festoon every balcony, it's easy to get distracted. We decided to make a beeline for the Basilica di San Francesco first though, and got there at about 09:00 (it opens at 08:30), and we were so glad that we did as it was very quiet - everyone else must've been admiring those flowers. It was heaving by 10:00 though, so our recommendation is definitely to get up early!

There is a lot to see, and the frescos are stunning. The ones of the life of Saint Francis, painted by Giotto are especially interesting.

Given that entry is free, this is a fabulous way to start your day, before finding somewhere later for that expresso!

There is something quite spiritual and special about this place, when you see the great building as you drove up towards Assisi town. There are three floors of worship and each floor has amazing artwork. A great feeling of peace when you sit in prayer. The crypt is so special, sat there whilst a choir I think from Germany had service and choral singing. It was so beautiful and the acoustics was great. No photos allowed inside.

If you love Giotto's painting, then this Basilica is a must see.
There are also many works by other notable artists within the church.

This cathedral is lovely from the outside. But it feels more like a museum inside than a place of reverence. If you want to experience the peace of St. Francis I recommend the church in the valley, Mary of the angels.
