“Simplistic, holy place”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

After seeing all the beautiful churches in Italy it was wonderful to see this simple, stone church. It's surrounded by olive orchards. Definitely make the effort to stop in while walking around Assisi.

“A hidden treasure”
Reviewed 24 February 2014

We had missed this little church on several previous visits to Assisi and it was pointed out to us by fellow pilgrims. It lies between the two main roads that lead down from the Piazza to the Basilica.

Legend has it that the bells of Sto Stefano chimed out spontaneously when St Francis breathed his last.

We found it wonderfully quiet and peaceful.

“Don't Miss This Simple Church”
Reviewed 2 February 2014

It's easy to miss this little church nestled in an olive and walnut grove off one of Assisi's less-traveled streets. Step inside and experience the work of craftsmen whose names are unknown, but whose work no doubt reflected their spiritual commitment. There is no fancy artwork, pretty stained glass windows, or statues, but the beauty of this house of worship is in its simplicity. Lingering here in silence for even a few minutes is refreshing.

“A Place of Wonder”
Reviewed 3 December 2013

No Place in Assisi affected me more than this tiny 12th century church. If you visit the town square exit by the upper street Via San Paolo walking in the direction of the Basilica di S Francesco. About 10 or 20 yards after passing through the gate on the left you will see an opening with a little lane. Walk down this lane and you will soon come to this exquisite little church. This is one of the places where St Francis preached and historians say it is so little changed that were he to visit today he would have no trouble recognizing it. Most of the places in Assisi associated with him he either did not see or like the Porziuncola and the little room where he was nursed in his final illness are so over painted that they are no longer buildings he would know. But this little church was not built for show. It is so rudimentary it seems an act by the people who built it of their need to honour their God. To me this truly is a sacred place. To sit here in its quiet fills me with awe. Here is the true spirit of Francis and I think it a pity he is not resting here. Tradition holds that when Francis died the bells of Santo Stefano spontaneously rang out.
