“A wonderful experience of Italy at its best”
Reviewed 29 December 2011

We stayed at Borgo di Carpiano over 18 months ago. It is a sign of the success of our stay that we were talking about it with such affection so long after the trip that I felt compelled to write this review. Marilisa and Ricardo looked after us extremely well (there were 6 in our group) and made us feel thoroughly welcome and at home. Ricardo's cooking is superb (with a Neapolitan twist) and he takes great trouble to seek out the best local ingredients and the rooms full of character as well as comfortable. The sitting room, in the old chapel is a wonderfully peaceful place to sit and read. With Gubbio and Perugia not far away there is plenty to explore and I boiught a pair of Ricardo's magnetic reading glasses (see clickframe, com) in Gubbio and have been wearing them ever since. We would certainly go again.

This was our second stay at Borgo Carpiano. After our first stay at Carpiano in 2009, we simply would not consider a trip to Italy without a stay at the Borgo. Marilisa and Ricardo are perfect hosts. Their consideration for their guests and their personal warmth will make you feel immediately at home. You just can’t believe that you haven’t known them for years! Before we arrived in Italy, I corresponded with Marilisa about some activities that we wanted to do after arriving. Marilisa went immediately to work and made wonderful arrangements for us, along with very helpful suggestions about how to make the best use of our time, while we were out and about during the stay. We were so looking forward to staying at Carpiano that this time we brought along family and friends so that they could experience how we felt. There were six of us and we had such a wonderful time that I can’t even begin to put it down into words! Every night we would sit at our table for the six of us and Ricardo would prepare his wonderful cuisine and select a wine for us. He is just a wonderful chef! My wife and I stayed in the room that we stayed in the first time we visited because we remembered the beautiful views of the valley out of our windows. Those views play across my mind’s eye as a symphony of the colors of fall, combined with moods of the sun and the clouds nestled in the peace and serenity of the Umbrian countryside. Everyone in our party was enthralled with the Borgo and we knew that even though we were only at the beginning of our stay in Italy, Carpiano would top everywhere else we would go. It is Italy at its best and if you go to the Borgo, I’m sure that you will agree with me. In the meantime, I will from time to time look at my pictures from Carpiano like a love-sick teenager and look forward to our next stay there.

We stayed for 5 unforgettable nights at Borgo. It was in one word fantastic !The hospitality of Ricardo and Marilise is wonderfull and you feel at home from the moment you entered there pleasant place. Everything is perfect : the rooms (clean, spacious and tasteful decorated), the building with his several nice settings and places (the terrace for diner and breakfast, the swimming pool area,...) the silence and the breathtaking views over the valley, the beautiful dog Harmony, charming kittens and, of course, the wonderfull and honest kitchen of Ricardo. Believe us, it's the real art!!!
This is the perfect stay if you plan a trip around Umbria and we will be back as soon as we can !

We actually stayed Sep 2010, but having only recently joined tripadvisor, I felt compelled to go back and give Marilisa and Ricardo the credit they deserve for running such a exquisite establishment. The other reviewers say it all -- not sure there's a single superlative to disagree with. Loved the room, loved the service, loved the food (EXCELLENT!), loved the pool, loved the dog, loved borrowing the dog to go on hikes.

I'm still young (relatively) and have so many more places I want to see in the world, so I never understood travelers who keep going back to the same places for vacation. But Borgo di Carpiano, is perhaps the first place to capture our hearts in that way.

Btw, GPS makes the place a cinch to find...

Our three days at Borgo di Carpiano were unbelievable. Getting there takes a car and some time, as it is about 20 minutes off a main highway, but it is the most gorgeous property in a spectacular setting. The rooms are excellent and well appointed. Ricardo and Marilisa, the hosts/owners are wonderful. The food and wine are superb. The service is impeccable. This is a refuge after a busy day sight-seeing in Assisi and neighboring towns, or just a great place to relax, swim in the saltwater pool, and read a book.

From the moment we started mailing Marilisa to book our time at the Borgo, we realised we were on to something special - her warmth and helpfulness came through clearly. When we had to push our arrival out by a day, she was helpful and accommodating.

The Borgo is a unique and beautiful collection of stone cottages clustered around an old church. The church itself now forms the centre of the venue, converted into a comfortable lounge. The cottages, some renovated originals and some brand new, but sensitively matching the style of the old, make up the en suite bedrooms.

We were welcomed with a glass of chilled white wine on one of the many pretty stone terraces - each providing another angle on the spectacular scenery.

Our room with views on two sides had the most comfortable bed with crisp cotton bedlinen. Each room is different from the next, but all simply furnished with understated elegance. Shiny dark wood floors are cool underfoot. Even the loo had a view. Special organic toiletries complete the picture.

Riccardo's dinners are quite exceptional - some of the most imaginative cooking we had in three weeks in Italy - which is saying something in a country where nobody seems to make bad food. It was great to meet up with another foodie couple while having pre-dinner drinks.

Initially, we had struggled to find the turnoff into the well-maintained dirt road leading to the Borgo, but were set on the right track by a friendly neighbour, who communicated brilliantly despite having little English, and me, not much Italian.

We were very sad to leave and are planning a return visit - with more time to just stay and chill out.

Room Tip: All of them seem special in their own way. We loved ours with views over the clay tile roofs

this place is stunning, pure Italy as it was centuries ago with all the comforts you need today. what makes this place so special is the incredible attention to detail and the passion the owners are putting in it every day (service, superb food and relentless dedication to their customers). Congratulations Riccardo and Marilisa for creating such a jewel!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The ancient castle of Carpiano is among the hidden treasures of beautiful Umbria. This small hamlet is located at only 12 Km from the medieval town of Gubbio and 22 km from Perugia. In this pleasant place simplicity, elegance and warmth of genuine hospitality are ideally combined. The Borgo is surrounded by secular olive trees and lush woods in a pristine valley crossed by the Ventia stream. The three stone buildings that comprise it are perched on a spur of rock that ends with an infinity pool of salt water overlooking the valley. In the main building, the old church has been restored keeping the original frescoes and has been now converted into library and conversation room hosting classical music concerts and events. During the winter months meals are served in the large dining room in front of the warmth of the old fireplace while in the summer are served in the small square with breathtaking view over the valley.Home made bread, cakes and biscuits, vegetables from the vegetable garden and a search of quality ingredients, all strictly "seasoned with our own olive oil" ....The Borgo has only eight rooms all renovated respecting the original architecture and materials of the time. Get lost in the woods, plan to do very little, get accustomed to the silence are recommended activities!Borgo di Carpiano is also an ideal setting for an exclusive place to celebrate with your friends a special occasion. In house wine, cheese and olive oil tasting, cooking classes, therapeutic treatments and relaxing massages can be arranged. Horse riding, golf, rafting can be found in the nearby surroundings. The Borgo is in a strategic position to visit all the major Umbrian towns. ... more   less
