“Best in Italy”

Riccardo and Marilize is doing everything with so much passion and enthuziasm. The Borgo and the food was fantastic.Having our own guesthouse Christiana Lodge in Plettenberg Bay we know the effort that goes into such a detailed service. Even though the weather was cool and rainy we loved every moment. The tea and coffee facility in the lounge was a special treat as we are used to this in South Africa but found it in no other accomodation in Italy. Riccardo and Marilize have an open invitation to visit us.

Having travelled most of the world over the last 50 years and stayed in every type of accommodation from Youth Hostels to International 5 Star Palaces, Borgo di Carpiano embraces the best of everything we have yet experienced with fine views, comfortable clean rooms, excellent cuisine and beautiful buildings.
However, what all the others cannot possibly emulate is the extraordinary welcome and devoted service offered by our hosts Ricardo and Marilisa Parisi who lift the experience of staying at the Borgo from extremely pleasant to something that we will remember and cherish for the rest of our lives.
Their devotion shows everywhere, from the fine dining with wonderful local wines, the beautiful terraces and pool, the décor not to mention their assistants, Harmony, Lucky, Louis and Armstrong who are a delight as are the rest of their staff.
The relaxed and pleasing atmosphere imbued us all with such a feeling of well being that the visit became a wonderful house party for all the guests with no one wanting it to end and many new friendships made.
Sadly, the ratings herein only go up to excellent - if there was a sixth designated as the best ever, they would get that from us!
Thank you both for a wonderful stay - we are already booked to return next year and who knows, we may not be able to resist a flying visit this autumn!

My wife and I enjoyed four days at Borgo di Carpiano in May. This place is magnificent. Our room was very large, comfortable, quiet and had a wonderful view across the Umbrian hills. We particularly enjoyed our meals there. They were innovative and beautifully prepared. Ricardo and Marilisa are delightful hosts who made our stay very special. This is indeed a wonderful place to just relax or use as a base to explore Umbria.

This is our second time for an extended stay in Italy and the Borgo is now a "favorite" for us. The welcome is an architectural triumph for restoration buffs, but the personal service by the owners cannot be matched in our experience. Riccardo and Marilisa have poured their souls into creating an oasis of culinary delights, wrapped around a 9 room retreat with amazing details in refined baths, decorating, gardens and a signature infinity edged pool. Thanks for your services and helping us to discover the hill towns of Gubbio and Assisi nearby. Your connections became ours in a magical way.

Room Tip: Our room was the giant pass key with the red ribbon.

We visited Borgo di Carpiano a few years ago, and it remains an aspiration to return. The setting, the owners, the food are all way past perfect. This is the "Somewhere special" you should take note of in case you are ever looking for somewhere to celebrate, or just to treat yourselves. We couldn't fault it.

The recipe for success here is simple: (1) a beautiful location (2) comfortable and charming accomodations (3) exceptional food and (4) the most committed, caring, genuine and delightful staff you will find anywhere. Thank you Ricardo and Marilisa for a truly special, memorable experience. With fond best wishes

My wife, Stacey, and I got married in Gubbio in September 2012 after finding and falling in love with the Borgo di Carpiano. The photos are great, but with such a massive decision, we decided it was worth a scouting trip out to Italy to see it for ourselves, which Marilisa and Ricardo were only too happy to let us do even though it was February and in the off-season.

When we arrived and walked around we knew instantly, when somewhere is as beautiful as this place is even in on a bleak February day, that this was the place to do it. To be fair, M. & R.'s warm, calm and friendly approach to the whole thing was equally important; they really put our minds at rest. (Exceptionally "cool and calm" Italians, pitched against the nervous and awkward Brits!)

We opted to do an all inclusive package which included not only the Borgo for 3 days but also the services of the outstanding Sarah & Eric of Salve Umbria wedding planners (Brits). Literally EVERYTHING you could want was included (I think our only extras on the bill were for a some extra flowers and for alcoholic drinks outside of meal times). The package included a trip to Assisi and wine tasting the day after the wedding, which again, was spot on - the perfect way to relax after the busy arrival and wedding days.

There aren't really enough superlatives to describe the experience and the impact that Marilisa, Ricardo, Sarah & Eric had on our wedding experience. They did everything in their power to give us the best possible experience. M. & R. were everywhere and nowhere at the same time, making it feel like our wedding party were all alone to enjoy the pleasures of the place, but at the same time on hand at a moments notice to help sort something out.

The same goes for S.& E, who sorted everything out for the wedding and really helped take a lot out the stress of getting married abroad.

Our tips:
1) Do it! If you want to get married abroad with a handful (16 or so) friends we couldn't recommend doing it at Borgo di Carpiano enough. For the price of a really basic wedding in the UK, you could have 3 magical days with the nearest and dearest, against some of the most stunning hillside scenery and get married in the most beautiful medieval town of Gubbio.

2) FOOD - be ready to be ruined. Ricardo's food is without a doubt the best we have ever had. My dad has gone everywhere and eaten everything and even he was beside himself with how incredibly delicious the food was. Will I ever eat a meal as good as that again?!

3) Get out there a week ahead of time to chill out and relax. Agriturismo places are dirt cheap and perfectly nice. Really explore Gubbio and go eat out and have a gelato in the town square at midnight, get into the culture before the wedding.

4) Don't worry if everything is not done 3 months in advance like it is in the UK, they just don't work like that there!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The ancient castle of Carpiano is among the hidden treasures of beautiful Umbria. This small hamlet is located at only 12 Km from the medieval town of Gubbio and 22 km from Perugia. In this pleasant place simplicity, elegance and warmth of genuine hospitality are ideally combined. The Borgo is surrounded by secular olive trees and lush woods in a pristine valley crossed by the Ventia stream. The three stone buildings that comprise it are perched on a spur of rock that ends with an infinity pool of salt water overlooking the valley. In the main building, the old church has been restored keeping the original frescoes and has been now converted into library and conversation room hosting classical music concerts and events. During the winter months meals are served in the large dining room in front of the warmth of the old fireplace while in the summer are served in the small square with breathtaking view over the valley.Home made bread, cakes and biscuits, vegetables from the vegetable garden and a search of quality ingredients, all strictly "seasoned with our own olive oil" ....The Borgo has only eight rooms all renovated respecting the original architecture and materials of the time. Get lost in the woods, plan to do very little, get accustomed to the silence are recommended activities!Borgo di Carpiano is also an ideal setting for an exclusive place to celebrate with your friends a special occasion. In house wine, cheese and olive oil tasting, cooking classes, therapeutic treatments and relaxing massages can be arranged. Horse riding, golf, rafting can be found in the nearby surroundings. The Borgo is in a strategic position to visit all the major Umbrian towns. ... more   less
