First up, let me begin my saying that Gubbio is definitely a town worth visiting. We we there in July and were surprised to find that it was a quieter month. The town is extremely charming with a fair amount to see and do. In any case, it is lovely walking the charming streets. This hotel is in a fabulous spot and is well worth booking. The owners are extremely friendly and welcoming. We had made a booking on booking.com and had asked for a room with a nice view. We were so pleasantly surprised to find what been upgraded to their penthouse room. Spectacular! If we go back to Gubbio we would be sure to book in to this room to re-live the experience. The room had a sizeable terrace with 2 sun loungers, a table and chairs, and looked out over the entire town and beyond. It was a truly incredible experience. Breakfast decent enough and you can dine outside in the public piazza.

Don Matteo is a popular series on Italian tv, in which a nice and friendly elderly priest (played by Terrence Hill) solves a crime. It is a feel-good series, in which Italians recognize the 'old' qualities of Italy: living well, caring for others, being friendly to strangers.

Relais Ducale Hotel prides itself on hosting 'The café of Don Matteo', because some scenes of the series were filmed there; and clearly the hotel has the same warm and friendly atmosphere.

We had a few great days there. The rooms are excellent, extremely quiet (some guests below complain of the church bells, but they did not disturb us at all), with a magnificent view on wonderful Gubbio.

I couldn't imagine a better place to stay a few days!

Room Tip: We had a room with a view towards the square, which gave a great view!

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and we enjoyed every moment there. The weather was very hot, but there was always some cool spot in one of the internal gardens. Right in the middle of the main square, one can have a wonderful breakfast outside.
Like in *every* Italian city center, one can hear the bells, but they are really not annoying (as we've read in some reviews. We were worried but guys: this is Italy-- you hear bells in every square of every town). It's not as if the rooms are next to the bell tower: you can hear the clock from far-- it contributes to creating a great atmosphere. No, really: I'm hyperacustic, so I hardly sleep on hotels. In this one I slept like a log, it was quiet and protected, and in the center of one of the most beautiful Medieval towns in Italy.
The staff was incredibly friendly, just like every single person we met on the street. Highly recommended!

We have stayed at The Relais many times, for the Festa di Ceri ( May 15 ), our anniversary, and just for fun on the spur of the moment. But our really special occasion is for my wife's birthday. The Proprietor, Daniela Mencarelli ( the Mencarelli Group), always goes out of her way to make certain that this is a really special day and evening for my wife and I. Her husband , Sean, and American from Pennsylvania, works very hard to make certain that there is nothing left undone anywhere in the hotel. And the STAFF ! ! Thank you Luana for all your kindness. If you haven't stayed here, it is an absolute must. While Gubbio is a really great Medieval city, The Relais makes Gubbio a special city.

The service was wonderful and warm. Daniela and Sean, the owners, could not be any more welcoming and that is reflected by their staff. We asked for and stayed in Room 402 the Federico Montefalco suite which consists of a large bedroom, a dressing room and a bathroom and the only balcony in the hotel. The location is the best in Gubbio, directly across the street from the Palazzo del Consoli and its grand piazza. The views from the hotel are stunning. The building is historic and is complete with a former escape passage for the Duke of Montefalco. The hotel actually consists of three buildings which are connected inside by many steps. There are two main entrances to the hotel but the one that most people use is the one across from the Palazzo del Consoli and leads you into their bar. It is open until 11 PM and what we liked was that we were able to order either a light lunch or a light evening meal. They offer room service but we liked mingling with others in the bar area or outside under umbrellas on the Piazza itself. In addition to liking the friendliness and helpfulness of the hotel owners and staff, we enjoyed the historic aspect of the hotel and its many indoor and outdoor sitting areas. What we liked the least was the spotty wi-fi service in our room but I suspect it was because we were on the highest level of their hotel. I think it is important to keep in mind that this is a unique property with charm and it has its share of eccentricities and the best thing one can do is to appreciate them.

The hotel is located in the heart of Gubbio in the Piazza Grande....terrific views and central for day trips in Umbria. The hotel is run by a lovely couple and the entire staff is very helpful. Our room had a marvelous rooftop view of Gubbio and the surrounding countryside. Warning: there are lots of steps.

The hotel is located in the very heart of the historic centre of Gubbio, and its cafe/bar faces the Piazza Grande and impressive Palazzo dei Consoli. You enter through the cafe to find the building rambles sideways and upwards across several levels: reception is up two flights of stairs, then a couple of steps lead you up to a spacious terrace with tables. Across the terrace, a lift takes you up to more rooms, the top ones 50ft or so above, with their own smaller terrace. Our room was up here, and had fantastic uninterrupted views of Gubbio and the surrounding countryside. The rooms are quite large, with good sized bathrooms, period furniture and satellite TV. The breakfast buffet is ample, with unlimited choices from croissants, cake, fruit, cheese, yogurt etc. The staff were without exception friendly, helpful and knowledgeable, and gave us excellent recommendations for trips, restaurants and shops. Vehicle access (from Piazza Quaranta Martiri) to the historic centre is restricted: my advice would be to follow the one way system to Piazza Grande, where the hotel staff will help and advise. Parking close to the hotel is tricky, but there is ample free parking a 5 -10 min. walk away. We had a great stay and would return happily.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view.
