I stayed here for three nights to experience the insane Festa dei Ceri and I'm so glad I was able to book this hotel last minute on the internet. Inside the modern, comfortable interior you can see the bones of the original 14th-century convent (a fact I read somewhere). My single room with shower, on an upper floor, came with a TV and had a small balacony that I enjoyed. Though the shower water could not be contained as there was only a drain in the floor, it didn't bother me too much. As a lone budget-conscious traveller relying only on public transportation, this hotel was a bit of a splurge for me, but great value and couldn't have been more convenient to the main bus stop compared to other similarly priced hotels up hill. Though not situated in the heart of the city, Gubbio is small enough that this doesn't matter.
The hotel has a restaurant which is covered by an impressive vaulted stone ceiling, but I didn't get a chance to try it because there were so many good dining options in town. The menu looked extensive. I very much liked Il Bargello in front of the old city jail that serves wonderful, simply prepared foods at moderate prices.
Off the beaten track, Gubbio has a beautifully preserved medieval city center that is worth a visit for an old-fashioned feel of Italy. Combined with the Festa dei Ceri and a stay at the Hotel San Marco, you'll wonder why you didn't come sooner.
