We stayed in room 236 for 5 nights in April, having been upgraded to a deluxe room with a balcony overlooking the Umbrian countryside. The room itself was huge, with traditional padded gold wallpaper and with floor to ceiling double doors opening on to a juliette balcony. We arrived to a generous complimentary fruit bowl and bottle of local red wine. the bed was a king in size, but was actually two smaller beds joined together. Bed linen was pristine. Unlike other reviewers, we had turn down every night, complete with weather forecast and mints. We asked for softer pillows, which arrived within minutes of our request.
The large marble bathroom had a shower over the bath, bidet, huge fluffy towels, bathrobes and slippers. Toiletries were of an excellent standard and topped up twice a day. Our only issue was the usual European shower getting the whole bathroom soaked thing, but in a building as old as this, there must be restrictions on what they can do. There was a glass door on the side of the bath, but it seemed to be fairly ineffective. We also struggled to work the taps out, but that was most likely our own ineptitude.
The breakfast room was magnificent. On our first morning, we gave our room number and Lucio knew our name - most impressive! There was a huge selection of food, from fresh and tinned fruits, yoghurts, cereals, breads, cold meats, fresh ricotta, superb, fresh pastries of all descriptions. Hot food was largely scrambled eggs, panchetta and local sausage - all superbly cooked and kept hot. As other reviewers have noted, there was no fresh orange juice, which is unusual for a hotel of this standard and coffee was rather hit an miss - cappucino was always spot on for flavour etc but sometimes less than luke warm We understand it is not supposed to be hot, but it could be tepid at best. All that said, service was unfailingly excellent and none of these minor issues detracted from our pleasure at all.
We only used the front desk on a couple of occasions, but each time the service was swift and professional.
The downstairs spa area was fantastic. The pool area was almost ethereal in nature, really peaceful and clean.
Location of the hotel couldn't be bettered. It was two minutes to the main square, opposite the escalators to the bus station, 5 minutes from the mini metro. There was a supermarket a couple of minutes away too for water etc should you need it.
All in all, we loved it and wouldn't hesitate to go back.
