“Very beautiful & unique hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 May 2014

On our drive back from Amalfi to Rome, my partner & I were looking for a place to stopover for a night or two, and decided to stop in Perugia. Hotel Brufani Palace looked and sounded decent from traveller reviews, but upon arrival, it is a hotel more splendid than can be described.

The hotel located right in the town center is walking distance to food and entertainment. Parking was also taken care of by the hotel in the underground carpark at the hotel. The hotel is tastefully grand, with beautiful views overlooking Perugia town. But what made it such a memorable hotel is its underground/indoor pool with ancient ruins viewable from the glass pool floor! Now which hotel can boast of such a distinct talking point?

Drinks at the bar was also served with small snacks topped with caviar. While some of the staff can come across as a little stuffy, I would understand if they had something to be proud of.

The only note of caution is the hotel does have several wings and dark basements, so be careful where you roam to with the different elevators. Don't take the wrong one unless you don't mind getting lost and surprised. Rooftop views offer 270degree amazing views of the town.

This is a hotel that is definitely on my "to revisit" list.

Room Tip: Get higher floors to overlook the town

The hotel sits in a perfect corner of town, with stunning views. We had a room on the second floor with a picture perfect view of surrounding area and multiple rooftops. You can walk to the four corners of town very easily from this hotel. The bathroom had windows that opened to the view.
Tub with a view! The lobby rooms and dining rooms are lovely.
The only negative is the prohibitive internet connection and charges. Way too complicated.

Room Tip: Quieter rooms at back with small terraces and stunning views. We had a corner jr. suite

Visited Perugia and Brufani for the first time during the International Festival of Journalism, which transforms this hotel into the main events center. While that means the lobby and the ground floor are permanently packed, the hotel's rooms are marvellous with some amazing views of the hilltop town and its countryside. I was in 425 which was a very spacious "attic" suite, very spacious, comfortable, clean and with a huge marble bathroom. Everything works wonderfully, the service, including the turn-down, is unobtrusive, thorough and great. The breakfast is the usual European hotel buffet but with lots of fresh juice, coffee and breads. Fiorella made the bar a very enjoyable experience even though she was pulling 15 hour shifts during the Festival. I imagine the hotel, and its rather central but to the side of all the action location, is even more charming and wonderful when there isn't a major international festival headquartered there. The staff are very friendly. Wifi is not free and by the hour. I didn't eat any meals at the hotel and never got around to actually using its terrific sounding underground swimming pool and spa. Next time, I hope.
Wish the hotel had a coffee maker in the room though I guess instant coffee in an Italian hotel room is way too downmarket for the hosts :-)

Room Tip: Had friends stay on floors 1 and 3 and loved their rooms...looks like you can't really go wrong.

Dear Guest,

I totally agree with you. During International Journalism Festival our hotel seems to be a "packed" hotel. But the event and the atmosphere in the hotel and in the city are fantastic.

I am very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and I really hope you will come back next year and you can try our restaurant and indoor swimming pool.

Looking forward to serving you again next year, we remain with our,

Kindest regards,

I had the chance to spend two nights in this lovely hotel right inside the charming city of Perugia. The location cannot be beat and the staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful. The food was amazing and beautifully presented. The little spa/exercise room in the basement has a hidden treasure: a pool with a glass bottom to show the ancient ruins that were found beneath the floor when they built the pool. How brilliant not to just cover them up, but to allow guests to float over them!
Management does a superb job of making guests here feel like honored friends. Just outside the door, you can explore the town's beautiful streets and the remains of the old underground city.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the valley, which is spectacular.

This is a grand dame hotel and the sense of history is wonderful. Beautiful wooden floors, doors, grand dining rooms, and majestic views are just the beginning.

We had an amazing 2-night stay here on our second trip to Perugia and our second stay at Brufani Palace. The first visit in November we had a beautiful suite and this time, the top suite. We were welcomed to our room with a wonderful bottle of wine, beautiful fruit basket and a little ceramic plate (made it Deruta, famous for it's pottery) with some Baci chocolates all waiting for us on the coffee table with a lovely note from the general manager. The room had an enormous terrace, separate living room and even a walk-in closet. Beautifully appointed and maintained, it was a wonderful experience and the terrace had unbelievable views. Each day we came back to the room and it was perfectly cleaned and straightened. It was like the room had not only been cleaned while we were away, but loved.

Even though the room was a show stopper, it is the staff and management that really deserves the praise. From the moment we walked in the door, our names were known and we were remembered each time we returned. Kind, attentive, proactive, helpful and professional are the adjectives that come to mind when describing the experience. Everyone was so friendly that it was like coming home each night. Nothing was too much to ask for - directions, restaurant recommendations (which were great!), help with guides and day trips….everything was handled with pleasure.

The general manager is from this area and it shows. He was seen several times during our stay and was always the utmost in professionalism and knowledge. Each day when we came back he was interested in what we had done and always was ready with suggestions and offers of assistance. He arranged an amazing guide for us when we went to Assisi and also helped arrange a wine tasting nearby.

The hotel is a grand dame with stunning views from the very top and edge of the city. Everything is a 5-minute walk and you have to go no further than downstairs to the spa to swim above Etruscan ruins.

For us, there is no other hotel option in the area. The level of service and comfort along with stunning surroundings makes Brufani Palace the ONLY choice. We will happily return again.

One final note: We pulled up to the hotel and parked out front. Our bags were immediately delivered to the room and the car taken away. It was brought back each time we needed it and then upon check-out it magically appeared and was packed for us before we even left the lobby. It was great to just pull up to the front of the hotel, walk in and know that the car would be handled. An extra benefit to this amazing property. And….there was no parking charge!

Room Tip: Suites are enormous. If you are staying for several days, it is worth the upgrade.

We booked our room through Hotels.com. When we arrived, the front desk staff knew who I was and gave us this fantastic room overlooking the countryside. Based on other reviews, some seem to have been placed in a room that shows some wear... Sure, a hotel with this history probably still has some signs of aging. However our room was pristine. We booked a premium double. King size bed, large bathroom and vaulted ceilings. The hotel is centrally located within walking distance of most downtown shops and restaurants. We plan on visiting the pool tomorrow which I hear is beautiful. I think anytime you book the cheapest room in an older hotel, be prepared to see some wear and tear. However, this is the kind of place to book a nicer room since it definitely did not disappoint.

My wife and I stayed at Brufani Palace for the Monday - Friday before Easter. The staff was incredibly accommodating and polite. The hotel was busy, but we always felt like the only guests because of the speed and professionalism of the staff.

The Collins restaurant was fantastic along with the regional Sangiovese wine suggested for us. All of the front desk staff was friendly and helped us practice our Italian greetings. When we got lost on the train, Hasan answered the phone and helped direct us to the correct train back to the hotel.

Hotel manager Stefano Chiesa is on top of detail and can often be seen greeting guests in the lobby.

The pool was very memorable. My wife and I were the only ones there on a Friday afternoon. The ancient ruins can be seen through the water under your feet and the facilities are clean and tidy.

The hotel sits on the top of the hill and overlooks most of Perugia. There is plenty of excellent restaurants and shopping right out the front door of the hotel. A balcony view of the Umbrian sunset is a must!

P.S. Taxi fare from the train station to the hotel is 12 Euros.
