This was the second time we have stayed in this idealic spot in the Umbrian hills. It usually takes us a while to unwind on other holidays, but within a days we had settled into the lovely rhythm of eating amazing food prepared by the generous hosts, relaxing by the perfectly sized and rediculously beautifully situated pool, with its incredible vista overlooking Mount Subasio, and having some genuinely restorative time with our children exploring the local countryside and Umbrian lifestyle. I couldn't recomend this getaway more highly, it has fulfilled its promise as a perfect holiday.
Fabulous location...superb accommodation....the place to go for relaxation and good wine.
Loved the swimming pool in the mountains. Idyllic.
Perfect for couples wanting a romantic getaway.
Beautifully converted buildings in the heart of Umbria with scenic rural views of lush vineyards, fields, hills and woods. Assisi can be seen some 40 km distant. It is an idyllic venue for relaxing by the pool or venturing into the local area with its many small towns crammed with architectural and artistic gems. Within easy driving distance are Gubbio, Cortona, Spello, Todi, Orvieto, and Montone to name just a few. To crown it all, the hosts are a delightful family who are most gracious and helpful without being in any way intrusive. We shall certainly return.
There is something appealing and romantic about the Italian way of life and Casa San Gabriel allows you to indulge in it in style. We stayed in the one bedroom cottage and had a wonderful time in Umbria, visiting so many beautiful and interesting places each day before returning to the peace and tranquillity that is Casa San Gabriel set amongst verdant green mountains, olive groves and vineyards. Sitting on the terrace overlooking the valley and mountains, listening to the sounds of birds and local wildlife, such as wild boar and sipping on a chilled Rose' from the estates vineyard while sampling olives and truffles from the same estate - Life doesn't get much better!
Casa San Gabriel is where everything you hope for in an Italian holiday seems to magically come true. There is a gentle charm about the place that makes you feel refreshed and happy from arrival. The beautiful pool with stunning views over the gardens and hills is hard to leave but there are many things in the valley to see and do. This place has authenticity. There is a vineria selling wine from the vineyards, the olive trees are used to make Casa San Gabriel’s own olive oil and the house alpacas fleece is knitted to make soft teddy bears. The charming Lang family look after it all and it was easy to get to from Perugia airport with Montone and Assisi close by. I can’t wait to return some day soon.
While Casa San Gabriel is a little remote, it is an ideal location to experience Umbria. The lodgings are great, clean and comfortable with spectacular views. It is located in the countryside, but Perugia and many other cities are not far away. You are only 30 or 45 minutes from Orvieto, Perugia, Cortona, Arezzo, etc. If you are looking for good food and wine, look no further. There are fantastic restaurants within 15 minutes and the best enoteca in Italy (according to the NYTImes), Enoteca Properzio, is only a 45 minute drive to Spello. Our hosts, David and Chrissie, we incredible.
We had a wonderful time up in the hills! The setting was absolutely beautiful, very rural but so wonderful to lounge by the pool under blue skies looking over glorious scenery, a total escape. Having a playground and lots of space to run around, not to mention the friendliest dogs ever and the amusing alpacas, kept a 16month old entertained for hours. Having all the baby kit on site (stair gates, changing mat, toys, books and playdough for a rainy afternoon) was fantastic.
David and Chrissie were very attentive but left us time and space to ourselves.
There are lots of great day-trips to do within easy driving distance if you need a bit of culture, history, more beautiful scenery and ice-cream. The beach at the lake was a little bit of a disappointment, but this isn't really a beach holiday and the pool at the house is perfect.
We had a great time and wish we had been able to stay for another week!
