We spent a couple of hours today with Marta Brozzeti, who is keeping alive her great-grandmother's hand weaving enterprise. The weaving shop is located in a 13th century former church, using hand looms and replicating textiles which have been made in Umbria for centuries. Marta guided us around the workshop and passionately explained the history and current workings of the workshop. It was a fascinating look at a real artist's work.

This is a beautiful building housing interesting, historic looms and run by a charming and very talented woman named Marta. If you are interested in the history of textiles in Perugia or in history in general. A visit here is well worth your time. Of course, it addition to seeing the table runners etc. being made in the traditional designs, you can purchase them and take the experience and memories home with you.

We didn't know what to expect - especially after having left many a factory in places like Turkey and India feeling bad about not buying something and also about the harsh conditions for the workers. This was an entirely different experience. We were fascinated by the intricacy of the work and the patience and dedication of Marta to what now seems to be a rare art form. All this in an amazing setting (an ancient church).

A magnificent collection of 18th century hand-worked looms all in working order and all housed in a really beautiful building. It is quite a long way off the beaten track but is well worth a visit. When we got there it was all closed up but as soon as someone noticed that we were looking for the museum, they opened especially for us. We were given a demonstration of the different looms and the whole experience was fascinating. Marta, the owner, was exceptionally friendly and her English is wonderful. An absolute must see for people who want to see something that little bit different.

Use her address, (not Tripadvisor map) and head for university area. Marta was at work weaving when we arrived, and she stopped to patiently teach us about the authentic medieval looms that she has restored, to demonstrate them, and show us the traditional weaving patterns of Umbia. She is kind, patient, and her work is exquisite. Boughtba piece for our church's altar cloth.
If you go to the National Gallery of Umbria after, you will see the textiles drawn in the artwork with new eyes!
