For full disclosure, I worked on a project for this museum, so I am biased.

This museum is small, but book a tour with the lovely guide Chiara and she'll take you beneath the Duomo. Most of the artifacts from this site have gone to the Archaeological Museum of Umbria, but they couldn't move the real treasures.

You can see three layers of human occupation. The Etruscans, the Romans, and the Medieval period.

You can see the area where 3 popes were elected. You can walk on a Roman road that still has wheel marks in it. You can see massive Etruscan walls.

My personal favorite part is the roman house where there's a burn level that shows the destruction of Perugia by Augustus.

For a museum that just has Chiara running it, it is impressive. That's why you must book a tour and for your convenience, Chiara has spent the last few years learning English (she says her English is bad, but she's just modest).

It can be cold underground, even in the summer, so maybe bring a cardigan too.

Capitolar Museum makes part of the choice of the Perugia Card. I visited Perugia together with my 17 year old daughter. On the first day I bought a Perugia Card of 13 euro that allowed free entrance for a minor under 18. I bought the Card at the Tourist office. On the site there is literally written 'A/F CARD € 13,00 Valid for one adult, along with free admission for one child under the age of 18. Admission to five museums. We chose the Galleria Nazionale, Collegio del Cambio, Collegio Mercanzia, San Severo and Capitolar Museum.
In the Capitalor Museum we were refused the entrance because the (very unfriendly) lady at the frontdesk claimed that our card (type A) was not valid for the free entrance of a minor. We went back to the tourist office to get explanations. Over there they showed us the rules on the back site of the brochure. And indeed there was written that an A card gave permission to a minor. We went back to the museum. I speak Italian so I asked the lady to actually read the rules on the brochure. She refused to read this, she became really rude and kept refusing us the entrance. Unbelievable! We just walked into the museum then ignoring her shouting.
This was a very unpleasant experience especially because we had the same one again at the Collegio Mercanzia
Beside this I have to say that this is a great museum. The pieces are very well displayed.
No crowds at all.

This museum is located right next to the Duomo and has some most interesting art and architecture to explore. It can be visited with the Perugia Museums card and we highly recommend it.

Another outing with my 6-year-old grandson after we had explored the Archeo Museum. As usual, due to our ages,we didn't have to pay,but it would have been well worth the nominal entrance fee. He was given a sheet of things to discover, like a treasure hunt, details in paintings or features of a sculture, and for each one you got a point. At the end there was a prize if you found everything. Needless to say he paid attention to each object looking for the required details and we spent an interesting 1 1/2 hours wandering through the many rooms. His final reaction? "What a lot of beautiful stuff!"

This is a very interesting place. We got to see underground the cathedral. Tours have to be booked beforehand because you can only go with a guide. The guide spoke both english and Italian. We saw ruins 100 years BC, roman times and 13th century. The bad side? Elevator to go back up was not working at the time of our visit.
