Our three nights here were amazing to say the least. It's not inexpensive but definitely worth every cent!! I have nothing but wonderful things to say about every aspect of the hotel, it's staff, and location.

I don't even know where to begin. We were impressed from the moment we arrived. The staff was outstanding from the front desk to the restaurant servers. The furnishings take you back through time. We enjoyed the gardens, the pool, the view of the country side, and the food. We explored the castle several times because there was always something new to see.

The only bad thing about staying at the castle was having to leave.

Room Tip: Any room in a castle has to be a good room.

My husband and I stayed here for 5 days as part of our honeymoon in Italy. Who wouldn't want the chance to stay in a castle? Our room was La Postierla which was up an external staircase close to the pool. We had a beautiful view over the valley towards Perugia.

The staff were very helpful, lending us an umbrella when it rained, which unfortunately it seemed to do most nights, telling us where the best place to park was and even organising some pastries and coffee for us when we had to leave earlier than normal breakfast times.

We didn't eat in the restaurant so can't comment on the food at dinner but breakfast was delicious with lots of choice. Service at breakfast was a little slow in both taking drink orders and replenishing buffet items but that's a minor complaint.

The maid service was excellent, the best I think we've had, fresh towels, morning and evening and everything replenished with the slightest use.

We had an enjoyable stay, but this would have been even better had the hotel acknowledged it was our honeymoon in some way.

Room Tip: If you want a view or outside seating then enquire as it's not clear on the website which do.

Converted old castle - very well refurbed with modern take on old furnishings. Fab views of Umbrian countryside. Bit of town but worth the drive. Staff very helpful - great restaurant as well. Has small pool and lovely gardens. Make sure you take elevator to top of castle

I highly recommend this hotel. They've done a masterful job of updating a Renaissance castle to modern standards of comfort and luxury (heating/cooling, etc.) while preserving the character and uniqueness of the property. You couldn't ask for a more beautiful setting. Located on a hillside 2 miles outside Perugia, the hotel is a bit hard to find, but it is worth the hunt. The hotel grounds provide many places to enjoy the views out over the countryside amid the lovely gardens of the hotel. Staff were extremely professional and helpful. Our room was comfortable; bathroom was terrific, bed and pillows were adequate but not as comfortable as I would have liked. I have stayed in other historic castles and villas, and I would place this near the top of the list for value and character relative to the price. While I was visiting with a friend, this would be an ideal spot for a romantic get-away.

This hotel is fantastic and I highly recommend it for all. It is a little more expensive but the service is great and the food at the restaurant is off the charts. Certainly a highlight of our stay in Perugia

Dear James G,
thank you very much for loving your experience at the castle...we love your review, instead! Your nice words about service and staff reach all of us.
Concerning the view, not all the rooms have a panoramic view, so we always recommend to ask for a preference at the moment of the reservation - if possible, we'll be happy to satisfy this request.
Anyway, the view is all around the castle, we're in a very lucky position respect to the town and countryside. We hope you'll find the chance to come back to Umbria, we'll be happy to welcome you again.

If you're looking for a special place, a pretty unique, boutique experience in a lovely part of Italy, this is it. The Castello di Monterone s a beautifully modernized boutique hotel (we counted eleven rooms) in an old castle, with several new parts added, overlooking the valley beneath Perugia and looking directly out at the city itself a mile or so away on the next hilltop. It's a not bad cab ride to the city if you don't have a car or don't want to take it (a reasonable choice). The rooms are lovely, and of various different shapes and sizes, some with valley overlooks and some not, some with balconies and others not. There is good wifi and all the other modernities in the rooms. The service is excellent but you should not be expecting what you would get in a big luxury hotel but instead all you need in a simple, straightforward style and very friendly and warm. Breakfast is excellent - a mix of Euro and American - and served late, which is good since Perugia is a wonderful night town, especially during the Umbria Jazz Festival which is when we were there and which we highly recommend for jazz, and even just music, afficionados. The hotel restaurant is one of the top ones in the area with a limited but outstanding menu which changes daily, but you will also want to eat in the many excellent restaurants in Perugia and the surrounding area, including a variety of agriturismos.

Our room was in the back, spacious, with a fine bed and all the sockets we needed, a small but excellent bath (shower only) and a sofa and TV (if you can stand Italian TV). The sheets were excellent - practically silky and the towels and robes comfortable and fluffy. It was very quiet and comfortable.

This is a romantic, lovely and unusual place, just perfect for that special vacation.

Dear Peter L,
your review really touches our hearts. It seems like you have fully understood the mood of our place - and we first admit that it is something not easy to catch.
We all put a bit of ourselves in our job and there is a part of human dream behind the recovering of the castle as an hotel. It used to be a family house in the past, and now, at modern times, we all want to continue giving our warmest welcome to a special place, far from any idea of mere luxury, but with the special touch of education, courtesy and attention.
We appreciate you compliments to the restaurant and we are very happy also that you decided to visit the town of Perugia, that is beautiful and still alive, especially during the Umbria Jazz Festival.
We feel very proud that you have spent a special holiday with us, we hope our invitation to come back will be enough to repay your lovely feedback.

We stayed here for 3 nights in the Cardinal's room. This is a wonderful hotel - a small and gorgeous castle carefully restored as a hotel. The rooms all vary - ours had windows overlooking the countryside, lovely panelled ceiling, marble bathroom and was furnished appropriately for a castle. The bed has great linens - it is a little firm but that is usual for Italy. We asked for down/feather pillows which were provided and were very nice.
The gardens are very pretty with lovely views towards Perugia and a small pool. The restaurant, La Postale, serves breakfast - nice selection of food that you help yourselves to including freshly squeezed orange juice, fruits, yoghurts, pastries, cakes, meats and cheeses and breads. The coffee is excellent.
We also ate dinner twice at la Postale - it was lovely sitting out on the terrace looking at Perugia. The food is good - modern Italian with a limited menu on Mondays and Tuesdays. The venison was excellent as the the beef slices on the grill.
The hotel is about 3km from Perugia- you can walk but we would catch a taxi in and then walk back.It would be more convenient if you had a car but driving around Perugia could be challenging. It was lovely to spend time in the town and then come back to the peace and quiet of the Castello.
The staff are excellent - especially on reception.
Highly recommended.

Dear Go55,
Thank you for all your lovely words and for taking the time to leave us your feedback.
It is great to hear that you had a great time and appreciated the extra touches we made during your stay at the castle.
We are happy that you liked the room Cardinale with its view and its frescoes, all of our rooms come in different shapes and peculiarity such it is the nature of the castle: being so unique and full of different facets and details.
Everywhere, in and around the castle, we want people to see how much we care in every little thing to ensure that all aspects of our guest's stay are as enjoyable as you have described, your comments are very rewarding for us.
It is very good to know you appreciated also the food experience at il Postale and that you found your desired peace and quiet during these 3 days at the castle.
When you'll come back to Perugia, it would be our pleasure to welcome you again.
See you soon!
