“"Not for Me"”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

When I arrived in Basel, I discovered the Hotel City Inn was located in the Hotel Euler. After checking in, the bell man led me to my room through what seemed a maze of hallways, then up one floor in an elevator and finally up two flights of stairs. I'm not sure who was sweating more, me or the bell man. When I inquired about a room that didn't require climbing two flights of stairs, I was told it would cost more. I declined.

The room, being on the top floor, was warm and for me required turning on the AC in order to sleep at night. The next morning, when it came time to take a shower proved a bit of a challenge because of the location of the sink and the design of the shower door in the small bathroom.

There were times when I was leaving or returning to the room and I lost track of where I was, turning in the wrong place or forgetting I needed to get on the elevator.

While the room was clean and nicely decorated, it just required too much work to get to. The Hotel City Inn, to my mind, seems poorly thought out. No one should have to go through that much effort to get to their room. Knowing Basel better now, I would stay in a livelier part of town next time, instead of near the train station.

Room Tip: Spend more money on a room to avoid climbing stairs.

Dear Hotel City Inn-Guest
Thank you very much for your positive review. After reading it I walked the way from the entrance to the Hotel City Inn myself. We have 7 signs showing the room-numbers of the City Inn and signs also indicating the Hotel Name. As it seems not to be clear a 100 %, we will think about what we can do in addition. Thank you very much for this valuable input.
Kind regards

To avoid at all costs if you don't want your cards and bank details messed up with deposits (which are not stated in the booking contract anyway) that then are charged and only returned after more than two weeks (!) and only after a few emails/phone calls dealing with completely uninterested and rude staff. And all that just for a quick one-night stop-over of less than 8 hours at this hotel.

You wonder if Hotel City Inn is in the business of "hospitality" or finance.

Also bear in mind that "Hotel City Inn" is a refurbished part in the back of the posher "Hotel Euler" (and the deposit is probably a way to avoid you taking free breakfast at Hotel Euler). So from the Hotel Euler check-in counter you have to walk through a labyrinth of corridors at the former "back of house" of the Hotel Euler and climb with your luggage (since there is no elevator) to your room. It is not a hotel in the strict sense but a way to make a quick profit from what clearly look like formerly staff/back of house premises at Hotel Euler.

Room Tip: Avoid at all costs.

We stayed just one night in Basel.
Perfect location when coming to Basel by train.
Trams just in front.
Rooms - very modern, clean, well kept though these are quite small. But then, we are in Switzerland.
Television- There are many channels but not audible because the master volume is very low. So basically cannot be used. On a bad-weather-day, television is important and hope the hotel will improve that part.
On a saturday night, loud music and people could be heard from the street well into middle of the night.

I had a hard time finding this hotel because it is actually part of the Euler. But, I was very impressed with the nice people of Basel and how they were all willing to help me find it. The hotel is perfect for anyone traveling by train. This was an inexpensive way to stay in a nice hotel. They had converted a back section into a budget room area. I remember the linens being extra nice and clean. I liked the room so much that I booked a second night. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They even provided me with a bucket of ice for my swollen knee (hard to find abundant ice in Europe). It was a wonderful stay in a wonderful city.

Room Tip: The inexpensive rooms are in the back. It is a bit of a walk, but worth it.

Good location for ease of access to the Basel Central Train station and the trams are directly at the entrance of the hotel. Need to be on your toes to find the hotel as it is actually behind the Euler Hotel. You go into the Euler Hotel and check in there for the Hotel City Inn, where the staff are friendly and informative. You are then shown to your room where you need to walk down a few corridors, then into the small lift to the first floor and if you are on the floors above, you then need to drag your suitcase up a flight or flights of stairs which become narrower and the arrive at your room. If possible ask for help to take your bags to the rooms above the first floor. I stayed here one night with a friend before transferring to another hotel closer to the cruise terminal. The room and bathroom were both small, but were clean, tidy and adequately furnished and the bed was comfortable. Floors must be wooden as they creaked as we walked around. Best draw card for the hotel is the location as it is close to transport, restaurants, supermarket and other shops. And of course, the free mobility card that is valid for the duration of your stay at this hotel. Loved the lime green colour which brightened and livened the room up.

Room Tip: Try to book a room on the ground or first floor to avoid lugging bags up stairs that the lift doesn...

We wanted a hotel close to the train station for two nights. We found a good price from the hotel’s site. The room was recently renovated and was very nice. It was very quiet and the bed was comfortable so sleep quality was excellent. Only drawback was that the common areas of the hotel (corridors etc.) were not renovated and you had to go almost through the kitchen of Hotel Euler to find your way to the hotel. You also had to use the reception of Hotel Euler; by the way staff there was very helpful. Finally, we didn’t have breakfast in the hotel because we found it very expensive (almost the price you have to pay for dinner). Of course breakfast is expensive in all hotels in Basel and we found so many cozy coffee places with delicious pastries in Basel that you really do not need to have breakfast in any hotel.

This hotel shares the same building/reception as the Hotel Euler. To get to the City Inn rooms, you have to go through some corridors and stairs. There is a lift but it doesn't service all areas so you might have to take the stairs.

The room is not very large but adequate and it was comfortable, however the bathroom is very small.

The hotel is located well as it's very close to the main train station which means you can base yourself in Basel and easily do day trips to Germany, France and other parts of Switzerland. The hotel gave us mobility passes so we were able to travel around Basel for free.
