“Welcome end to a long day”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 July 2014 via mobile

This property was the first pit stop to a 4 night sojourn to Switzerland. What it became was a future destination! If you are reading my review to find a hotel in Basel that is close to the railway, look no further. We traveled by train from Paris to Basel after a long flight and travel day from the US. You literally walk out of Basel SBB station to the hotel. Food Coop and McDonalds (for those who care) are adjacent to the property.

Rooms are well appointed and energy efficient. The front desk team are wonderful and over the top helpful. I had a single room on the number 3 floor and it was on the front of the property and it was not noisy like other reviews stated. The morning breakfast was very complete and we'll attended by the staff. The property also has a juice bar.

I will return to Switzerland and I will stay at this property.

Although interior design, e.g. color scheme, is not up to date, the rooms are spacious, clean, quiet and stocked with a free mini-bar. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Any time I asked for something or when once i reported a malfunctioning bathtub facet they responded promptly. The breakfast to tip top.

This hotel was close to the central train station which in most cities may be a negative but in quaint Basel it is a positive as you are close to everything. We walked to our business engagements - and took the extensive tram network to restaurants and sights. The staff was extremely nice and accommodating. Breakfast was excellent in an old fashion wood paneled historic room. I would stay here again if my travels bring me back to Basel.

We stopped over in Basel, our first city in our first visit to Switzerland, on our way to Lucerne. Hotel St Gotthard was directly opposite the train station (2-3 minutes on foot with luggage) and right next to the tram station. This made it an obvious choice for us when we booked online. However, not so obvious was the level of service. It was simply outstanding and acted as our benchmark for all subsequent hotels we experienced in the following week in Switzerland.
Besides all the niceties of a good 4-star hotel, the front desk was pleasantly friendly and helpful (as opposed to robotically friendly and helpful). Halfway to Luzerne we realized we have left our things in the room safe. We went back and have access to the room without any hassle. Then after we reached Luzerne we again discovered we have also left a coat. It was easily arranged to have it sent to Wengen. And the nice touch was it was sent not in a paper bag stuffed with newspaper but nicely folded and mailed in a Louis Vuitton box. It is this sort of thoughtfulness that distinguishes good service from the mediocre. Thank you Patrick.

An excellent four stars, very comfortable and very close to the station and the city centre.
Employees always present, very kind and helpful.
Very clean and comfortable rooms and bathroom, well furnished, well lighted and efficient.
Great breakfast included, products quality excellent.
Complimentary fast wifi.
Swiss rates (very high, this is the only reason for the missing fifth star).

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the rear or in the side (some colleagues with rooms on the street in front have re...

We stayed at the Hotel St. Gotthard in Basel for nearly two weeks a few years ago and were happy to return again for a week's visit this July. Since our last visit, there had been some remodeling to add a juice bar in the lobby, and there were even more lovely art objects on display. Otherwise, everything was just as we remembered it: tasteful decor, spotlessly-clean rooms, friendly and helpful staff 24 hours a day, and a breakfast room featuring beautiful Swiss design and an excellent selection of delicious food to start the day.

The location is perfect for us, as we can take a train directly from the airport and Zurich and then just walk across the street to the hotel. Trams to every part of the city are just around the corner. There is a grocery store on the same block and good restaurants very near by. We have recommended this hotel to colleagues who have agreed this is a great place to stay in Basel!

Their slogan above, is obviously just advertising fluff, but their friendliness and warm welcome were certainly well up there with the very best we have ever received. The location is great for train travellers (which we were), though the next door McDonalds is slightly off-putting. Nevertheless, we would happily stay there again with a good sized, clean and very quiet (at the back) room, a decent breakfast and such a friendly atmosphere.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back for quietness.
