Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois

excellent city hotel, in walking distance for sightseeing, culture and shopping, full of history and extremely relaxed. what else?
have a cigar (or at least a glass of porto) at the basement bar: old-fashionned deep seats, directly over the Rhine shore, and be sure that Napoleon didn't have a better end of his evening when he stayed at this marvellous place.

Not only the location -by river Rhine- but also the quality of the matterials used to keep the traditional "antique' style of thye hotel are superb. Very tasty decoration and colors very polite and helpful staff and very generous breakfast with salmon and champain. And not only. Everything is done perfectly in a way to keep the quality and the traditonal style..

Room Tip: Rooms facing the Rhine make you feel special.

This again is Swiss hôtellerie at it's best. Only in these Swiss traditional, and mostly privately run places, does one has this sort of personalized recognition that makes all the difference.
This explains why they also have the best schools in the trade. Everything is done to try to achieve perfection and sometimes it even seems to be that, perfect like the Trois Rois. There is never the pretentious attitude that exists too often in top range hotels who are not confident enough in their own abilities and therefore think they must mask their worry with an attitude.

Room Tip: Ask for river view

The hotel service was impeccable. However, the Le Cheval restaurant was closed until March 6, 2012. Room was impeccable with an "old style" feel. Turn down service nice as were the toiletries. Would recommend staying here for a special event and either in the fall or summer months, as I am sure that it would be wonderful. They offer a cigar room as well as a nice view of the Rhine river from their lounge. The buffet breakfast was notable. Wish I had more time to experience the hotel, other than just the overnight stay.

Room Tip: specifically ask for a room overlooking the river. My room faced the business district and we hear...

Almost all of what the others have said about service and quality is true. It's a grand hotel in a lovely setting on the banks of the River Rhine. It's probably the nicest location in Basel and yes, it's pretty expensive, but then so is everything else in Basel unless you happen to live there and are paid in Swiss Francs. So no point going on about the cost! They seem to have a 'stay two nights, get the third free' offer from time to time, which is how we ended up being able to afford it. Best to look at hotels.com and compare it with the hotel website to get a feel for whether there's likely to be any sort of deal available.

So, what's good?

Location, generally opulent 'feel' of the hotel, breakfast (both the food and the view), free wifi, free minibar if you take a room overlooking the Rhine, aircon, self-cleaning toilets (!) and free tram pass (although all hotels in Basel give you that).

What's not so good?

The high level of bodyguards who hang around the library at all hours - oftentimes up to a dozen of them. The library is a quaint room on the first floor and would be perfect for a quiet read. But you can forget that! No idea who they have staying in the hotel but it seems to require a lot of minders. Yes, they mind their own business, but it's not very conducive to a quite read on holiday! Also, the stairs have quite bad subsidence. I don't think the hotel is about to drop into the Rhine but the stairs slope from side to side as well as up and down. So steady on the drink in the bar before retiring to bed. Finally, even if you book through Hotels.com and they say you've paid all taxes, you still have to pay the City Tax to the hotel on departure. This is about CHF7 per night.

On the whole, glad to have stayed there, and if you want to experience the great old hotels of Europe, this should be on your list - - - enjoy!

Room Tip: Pay for one with a view of the river!

This hotel is truly fit for three kings. The rooms are very well appointed with electronic control panel for things like closing the blinds, towel heater, marble floor heat, room temperature. On the other hand, they are furnished in a traditional and ornate/beautiful design, appropriate for the building itself. The service is impeccable, as you'd expect.

I haven't had the pleasure to eat at the restaurant for dinner but the bar service is exceptional and the cocktails are made artfully. Breakfast buffet is simply absurd it's so good. Meats, cheeses, breads, fresh exotic fruit and juices.

Rooms get 4 stars only because they're a little on the small side.

Room Tip: Some rooms have tubs and others just stand up showers, if you want a tub, be sure to request one. T...

Wonderful hotel, in the middle of the city yet still managing to feel separate from the hoi polloi. I go every year and they have even started giving me the same room, unless I specifically ask for a change. I love the fact that there are no tea/coffe making facilities in the room; you pay for 5*, you get 5* and should not have to make your own morning cuppa! The food is superb, it´s incredibly safe and easy as a female travelling alone and I fully intend returning as much as I can.
