“Afternoon tea - pretty disappointing”
Reviewed 22 November 2013

the afternoon tea in the lobby, even though it is a beautiful setting, is pretty disappointing. The food is ordinary, and if you order lactose free they seem to run out of ideas quickly. I got three unrefined sandwiches, preceded by what looked like store bought antipasti.

Worst of all the customer service. This unexperienced chap hurried us along for an hour and half and then completely forgot about us (or perhaps it was the end of his shift) so that we had go pay at the bar.

Choose Les Trois Rois for the ambiance and the setting and NOT for the food or the customer service. Forget everything you know and expect from a 5 star hotel and you may just have a good time.

Dear guest

Many thanks for having taken the time to evaluate your experience at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois.

It is a pleasure for us to hear that you enjoyed the location as well the ambience but nevertheless, we regret that your experience with the afternoon tea did not meet your expectations.

Concerning your remark to our guest service, our bar manager would like to apologize for the insufficient service – he and his team already took measures to prevent future complaints. Moreover, we will reconsider our offer for special dietary needs.

We do hope that we will get the chance to welcome you back again to the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois very soon. We would be very happy if you gave us a chance to make a better impression.

I've stayed in many hotels in Basel and this is the best. The staff are excellent and the décor is grand and traditional but really superb. The room, bathroom, bed etc could not be faulted and there was a robe and slippers, great toiletries, fruit in the room etc etc.

It was my birthday whilst staying there and although I had not told them they left a small gateau in my room with a greeting and a card from the manager.....a really nice touch and 'Thank You' to whoever organised it.

Breakfast in the brasserie was excellent - wonderful poached eggs with smoked salmon. Again the staff were excellent - efficient, smiling and welcoming. I had a drink in the bar but dinners out.

I was a bit surprised to see in a posting below that the minibar was free...that wasn't very evident. The only thing that would make it better was a coffee machine in the room like the Swissotel. But really that is being picky!!

Room Tip: The views across the river make it worth trying to get one on that side

Situated on the banks of the Rhine this old and perfectly restored building is a little gem. A hotel with a wonderful view but still you can just step out the door and be either on a tram, in the shopping centre or just walk through the lovely old town. I went to the tennis at St. Jakob's Halle, as are many events. The trams are just around the corner, come every few minutes and take 10 minutes to go direct to the hall. They are free to use while staying at the hotel, efficient and fun!
You feel very welcome at the hotel, your bags are quietly taken up to your room while you are welcomed with a red rose, a lovely touch, as was the cakes found in the room after check in and shown around. Staff throughout, from the housekeeping through to the reception, Brasserie, Concierge, everyone was most friendly and if they are able to help, they will put themselves out to help. Air conditioning and heated bathroom floors are most welcome. Beds comfortable, good linen, everything you need. Plus more if you ask. I had a wonderful room with a balcony on the Rhine. Rooms are sumptuous, perfectly restored but with all mod cons quietly working in the background. Breakfast is fantastic, food at the Brasserie and service fantastic.

Room Tip: For a room with a view, and a special treat, if you can afford it, ask for a room with balcony on th...

I have been here on three different occasions, and each time had a wonderful experience. The staff are very friendly, courteous and prompt. There are limited dining options but it did not bother us or effect our rating.

The rooms are very luxurious, however we stayed on the traditional side of the property. There is a recently renovated portion that is Art Deco themed. A lot of beautiful wood cabinetry, and paneling in our room. Remote shades and awnings. Heated bathroom floors, and luxurious bathrooms.

We have never experienced a bad stay or disappointment with this property.

I have stayed at the Trois Rois about ten times over the past few years on business trips to Basel. This is truly one of the grand hotels of Europe. Beautiful location overlooking the Rhine, beautiful old building. One gets a warm welcome from the door and the lobby staff. Rooms are classically decorated in rich fabrics and all the rooms I stayed in, whether on the river side or the street side were of a good size, with plenty of seating and work space and a very comfortable bed. The bathrooms have excellent modern fixtures and a beautiful dark marble and wood finish.
The breakfast buffet in the Brasserie is really superb, and enjoying that breakfast as you look out onto the Rhine in the morning is always a highlight of a stay at the Trois Rois.
The gym was remodeled about two years ago, and is small but very functional. Treadmills, bikes and cross trainers look out through nice windows onto the Rhine.
The only real issue with the Trois Rois is the fact that there is an important tram stop right outside the front of the hotel. If you have a room on the street side, which is what most budgets will require, you will definitely be affected by tram noise, particularly when they start up in the morning. I would not give up the other pleasures of the Trois Rois for this problem, but I always bring good earplugs when I stay here.
With the strength of the swiss franc, this is quite an expensive hotel, and I think I would find it a bit rich for personal stay. But if you can get there you will not regret it....all in all, a wonderful old-world hotel experience.

Room Tip: Riverside rooms are quietest, if you can afford them. Top floor rooms have lower ceilings than the o...

Dear Sir

Thank you very much for your detailed description of your several stays at the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois. As well we would like to thank you for being a regular repeated guest of our hotel.

It s a pleasure for us, that you like our rooms with all the furniture and equipment, the rich breakfast buffet at the Brasserie and the modified fitness room.

As the hotel is located in the center of Basel we offer not only a good city position but also a nice view overlooking the river. But therefore traffic cannot be avoided – we suggest a room to the riverside as well.

We are looking forward to your next business trip to Basel and to welcoming you again to the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois.

Yours sincerely

I have stayed here on numerous occasions before. I like to go back here for the excellent professional service, delicious food and the great view of all that comes and goes along the river.
This last visit was only for one night. I arrived early so that I could enjoy lunch in the Brasserie.
I enjoyed a very seasonal looking plate of risotto with fillets of fish, chestnuts and spinach which was really good and served by a smiling, friendly waiter.

After lunch I was shown to my room which was exactly as I had hoped and requested, on the top floor and with a bath. The single rooms are quite small but perfectly formed. I do almost always have to ask for a comfy chair to sit in as I do not fancy spending the evening sat upright at a desk chair but this never seems a problem.
I like the top floor with its tiny balcony because it is has a wonderful view up and down the river. The bed linen is of the highest quality and I had a great night's sleep. The air conditioning works well and quietly if so required.
One thing I cannot understand is the change from Molton Brown toiletries to some from Feuerstein which to me smell like disinfectant.
I normally detest buffet breakfasts but have to admit that this one is very good and thankfully the hot dishes are prepared to order and mine was beautifully presented.
The jams are the best bit, quite delicious and I was given a jar to take home after paying the bill.
I would always check the bill closely as once I was charged for two bottles of champagne here instead of two glasses. This time the amount was just about to go through in the thousands of francs instead of the hundreds for the one night stay. The receptionist had put the decimal point in the wrong place. I was surprised that I did not receive an apology but rather a look as if I had done something wrong.
However this did not spoil another special treat in a well run and immaculately clean hotel.
