We went here for free, and found the automation to be quite fascinating. The hands on experience makes it interesting for young hands too, but it did leave me thinking that the whole experience was a little weird.... I think that's their aim.

Amazing use of recycled material to display movement. There is a 7 minute "recovery" period before being able to activate the moving displays so it is a bonus not to have anyone close in front of you pressing all the electrical displays

The museum is located in a lush green park directly at the Rhine river, only a few bus stops from the city center.
The architecture of the building alone is worth a visit, the exhibits even more so.
Everything is humming, clicking, moving. You have to look for quite some time before you can see it all. Tinguely really was an inventive guy.
The museum is regularly changing its displays and invites other artists.
A must see in Basel for all interested in art, and even kids like it!

This museum is dedicated to the Swiss artist for whom it's named, Jean Tinguely, best know for his kinetic art sculptures. And you'll find plenty of them here in this nicely designed building by the Rhein. As you enter the grounds, one of the first things you see is a fountain created by Tinguely. Upon entering the building you'll notice a plane attached to the ceiling and a very large colorful kinetic sculpture that you can climb on. The kids will love it.

In one dimly lit room, there were several Tinguely pieces with animal skulls, that functioned as heads and reminded me of something out of a Sci-Fi movie, especially when they were moving. Very cool and spooky. There were also drawings by Tinguely and many photos spread throughout the museum. In addition to the work by Tinguely, there was a temporary exhibit called "Play Objects". Many of the pieces were quite fun.

While not everyone will like this kind of art, I think many will, including kids. There's some fun things to buy for everyone in the gift shop and a nice cafe when you're ready for a break. If you want to use public transportation as I did, there's a stop near the museum.
