This is a comfortable and functional hotel. It is a little unusual, décor is modern and minimalist. the staff are really excellent and very helpful. Breakfast is excellent. My room was very pleasant and comfortable and not very small by Basel standards. It is a little away from the main centre. There is wired internet access in the bedrooms with wireless only in the reception and breakfast area.
Like every hotel in Basel, Das Breite provides a Mobility Ticket that allows guests to avail of public transport in the city. It's good value by Basel standards.

I stayed in this hotel for a week, most of which was spent attending a conference. The room was comfortable--neither large nor small, with shelves (perhaps not quite enough) for clothing and stuff, a desk, a couple of chairs, and a private bathroom. I'm a light sleeper, so I really appreciated how quiet it was. There was a safe in the room for your computer, passport, or other valuables. The breakfasts were great: a pretty comprehensive buffet, with eggs and hot food as well as cereals, breads, and yogurt. The staff was friendly and very helpful. You could also borrow an umbrella, or a waterproof bag for carrying your things while you float/swim downstream in the Rhine.
I think all hotels in Basel include a transit pass for your stay, and you just bring a hotel confirmation email printout with you so that you can get from the Basel airport to the hotel on public transit without needing a ticket. Public transportation in this city is excellent, so even though the hotel isn't right in the center of town, there is no problem getting to and from the hotel.
Overall, this is a really good, reasonably priced European hotel.

We chose this hotel as our first stopover on our journey from Calais to Italy as it required no detour at all from our route on the A3 through Basle and we were attracted by its advertised ethos - providing employment to people with disability pensions, helping their integration into society. We certainly were not disappointed. Everything from our welcome in reception, the comfort, cleanliness and size of our room and its bathroom, the secure locked garage parking (extra charge well worth it in our view) and the excellent buffet breakfast, through to the help with accessing internet - were top class. The free tickets for the clean, regular and quick tram service in to the attractive city centre were an unexpected bonus and there we found plenty of restaurant choice to suit all tastes and purses. We expected to be disturbed by the road noise as we were on the front of the hotel but the sound proofing is 100% effective. We would definitely stay there again. The only slight downside was that wifi is only in reception area, but easily accessed and not too much of a hardship on holiday.

This was an unusual hotel. Felt like a deluxe youth hostel. I felt it was over rated on trip advisor at the time, once I had stayed there. It had an isolating atmosphere. Room was a little claustrophobic, though had all the basics well provided for. Management were excellent with a problem I had of accessing Ethernet from the room. The Manager came to the room and got the Ethernet working on my Apple Mac. Location is a little out of the way.

Excellent and dedicated staff. Very good breakfast.

Rooms were very clean and comfortable.

The only reason I'd put the rating the to 4.5 rather than 5 is because wifi is unavailable in the rooms. It can only be accessed from the lobby area. Also, there is no refrigerator in the room.

Free pass to public transportation is a definite asset. The public transportation in Basel is simple and superb. Taxi availability in Basel is quite sparse.

The restaurants nearby are pretty good and within walking distance.

Hotel does not offer lunch or dinner service (Sunday brunch is very generous and good).

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a tub. The showers flood easily.

This hotel was cramped, the lighting was dark and there wasn't much room to move around in. When I used the shower, since there was only a curtain and just a shower pan on the floor, I knew it was going to be bad. As soon as I started the shower, it started flooding all over the floor and there was no way to stop it. This is dangerous as someone could easily slip and fall with all the water flooding onto the floor.
This is not a business class hotel and maybe if you are staying 1-2 nights you can tolerate it, but I would not recommend it at all for a business trip or for a longer stay. We checked out after the first night.

Dear travel_beacon
First of all we like to thank you for having taken the time to write a feedback about your stay in our hotel.
We understand your point regarding the lightning of the room and we are already working on a redesign of the rooms (incl. lightning). The size of the rooms we cannot change - but for european standards 21 m2 for a Double room Economy and 23 m2 for a Twin bedded room is actually quite big.
For your inconveniences in our showers, we like to extend our sincere apologies. We do not have shower baths in all our rooms, because we are especially certified to be a barrier-free hotel. The whole bath has a special slip-resistant ground that even handicapped people won't slip.
Sincerely, DASBREITETEAM

We stayed at Das Breite four nights and enjoyed the experience thoroughly. it is a rather unusual hotel, combining stylish design (what a relief not to be surrounded by beige) with a lovely friendliness and great breakfasts. The staff are great: front of house efficient, kitchen and serving staff friendly and the cleaners absolutely lovely.

While the location may initially appear out of the city, it's a very pleasant 20 minute walk into town along the banks of the Rhine. And the Tingeuly museum is 5 minutes across the bridge. So don't be put off.
