Alte Markthalle in Basel is really a unique place. Having trouble finding its real purpose, it seems that the owners decided it to be primarily a food court. In small wooden shacks spread across the place you find all kinds of street food. Few bad, mostly good, some excellent (be sure to check Nane Sêle and Accento Agentino as well as Eisuru for dessert). Accommodated by few bars, cafés and shops around the sides. In between you find lots of tables, chairs and benches. Pick a seat, grab food and drinks from wherever you like, enjoy. But, be warned – servings are mostly very small and prices are a hefty premium.
The Alte Markthalle is also very good for families with children as they can freely roam around and use a very cool slide thats installed by the escalators to the right side from the main entrance. And you won't have any trouble with a stroller, too.
While Alte Markthalle is open from the mornings to the late evenings, food is primarily served over lunch and starting again from dinner through the evening. Which is the best time to go there as the place has a very good vibe to it when lights are dim and candles on all tables are lit.
