Alte Markthalle in Basel is really a unique place. Having trouble finding its real purpose, it seems that the owners decided it to be primarily a food court. In small wooden shacks spread across the place you find all kinds of street food. Few bad, mostly good, some excellent (be sure to check Nane Sêle and Accento Agentino as well as Eisuru for dessert). Accommodated by few bars, cafés and shops around the sides. In between you find lots of tables, chairs and benches. Pick a seat, grab food and drinks from wherever you like, enjoy. But, be warned – servings are mostly very small and prices are a hefty premium.

The Alte Markthalle is also very good for families with children as they can freely roam around and use a very cool slide thats installed by the escalators to the right side from the main entrance. And you won't have any trouble with a stroller, too.

While Alte Markthalle is open from the mornings to the late evenings, food is primarily served over lunch and starting again from dinner through the evening. Which is the best time to go there as the place has a very good vibe to it when lights are dim and candles on all tables are lit.

My wife and I visited the Markthalle and were really impressed. We had the Caribbean food and it was excellent! Jerk chicken, rice, vegetable curry, mango and chilli, cucumber and coriander salad, and grated carrot. Spicy but balanced flavours, piping hot and good portion size. We loved it so much we went back 3 times during our visit.
The thing to bear in mind is the price. Basel and Switzerland in general is much more expensive than the UK.
The variety of food is amazing and we will definitely be back.

My husband and I love exploring international cuisine and this place has almost anything you can think of. We went here twice (for lunch) during a 3 night stay in Basel. Had a platter from the Argentinian booth the first day then from the Spanish the next day. We shared a platter each time because the portions were huge which was a great value for Switzerland. Very easy to get to on the tram.

We visited on Saturday about 14:00, and found the vegetable market starting to close up. By the end of lunch from one of the stalls, they were setting up for a flower market, which would not open until 17:00. Plan accordingly.

Tired from walking through medieval Basel we wanted to find a cosy restaurant to spend our last evening on this trip. We did not find any restaurants to our liking in the inner city so we broadened up our hunting grounds.

We have walked pass the Markthalle before that day but did not stop in. But when hunger sets in any place where food is a possibility was checked out...

And what a surprise!!! The place was amazing. A Pantheon like building with small food shops in the center and tables all around. The shops displayed a tour de force in global foods. And you just ordered something and placed yourself at whatever table was to your liking.

The atmosphere was very relaxed but busy. The clientele ranged from babies to older people. And clothing style from very relaxed to suits and dresses. There was an "everybody is welcome" feeling in the big hall.

Please check opening hours and days before planning a stop in the Markthalle.

Thank Lars K
