“Heartily not recommended”
Reviewed 20 July 2014

Briefly, in spite of its excellent location (Münsterplatz, Basel) Zum Isaak (Gastronomie und Kultur...) is a passé and scruffy wannabe restaurant.
According to our experience, food was pretty average and badly cooked: e.g. my zander (Zanderfilet an Weissweinsauce serviert mit Ofenkartoffeln) was practically raw — and my potatoes, too..!
The service during our dinner was also definitely poor: waiters were ill mannered, clumsy, and embarrassingly slow.
Warteck — "Basel’s favorite beer" — and some nice trees in the courtyard garden were the only noteworthy things there.
We won't go there again.

“One of the friendliest places in Basel”
Reviewed 18 June 2014

We were pleasantly surprised by this place, since we walked into the 17th Century building expecting something a little stuffy We had a baby with us, and they were very welcoming to babies and children. We just went for drinks and dessert on a Sunday afternoon, and the people were so nice that it cheered up our whole day. The cake was great, and this place is a very pleasant addition to a visit to the Munster.

“Good food, good location, friendly service”
Reviewed 9 February 2014 via mobile

Bang in the middle of the old town, at the oldest square of Basel, is the friendly, laid-back restaurant Isaak. Good food, freshly prepared, inventive but not overly so, good selection of wines by the glass, small but interesting selection of starters, mains and desserts. Also nice place in the evenings, including Sundays! Friendly, attentive service. Highly recommended!

“The worst restaurant I have ever been to in Basel, by far!”
Reviewed 13 August 2013

We booked tickets for the open air cinema in Munsterplatz, and wanted to have dinner before the show, so we reserved a table here at Zum Isaak. On arrival, we confimed our reservation, and the waiter waved to three free tables in the back courtyard. The limited menu arrived, and from the poor choices i chose the prawn cocktail followed by the lamb medallions, what i got was from a kitchen nightmare. Both dishes were absolutely disgusting. The prawn cocktail had chopped shrimps in a strange sauce, but this was buried under two inches of whipped cream. What was the Chef thinking? The lamb was completely undercooked, wrapped in raw bacon, and by the toughness of the flesh, it must have been from a Mountain sheep that died from old age. This was accompanied by tasteless taboule, and one fresh cherry tomato. the only thing on the plate which was actually enjoyable.
We paid and left in disgust.

Only to find that the open air cinema had its own food stalls, pizza, mexican, thai etc. at least our ice cream for dessert was actually worth the money.

If you want to have a fabulous meal, whilst enjoying the ambience of Munsterplatz, bring a picnic!
