“View of Mont Blanc (4807m) and Lake Geneva from Mont Salèves”
Reviewed 3 August 2011

A half day activity that you could do:

(French only it looks)

At Geneva main railway station Cornavin, take bus No.8 to Veyrier-Douane that's the last stop of the line. The ride is only about 20 minutes. Cross the customs/border (unmanned since some time now) which is only 20 meters from the bus stop and walk into France. Cablecar station is 5 nimutes walk. Buy the ticket for the cable car ( €10.80 for return ride - this is France so you pay in €). The cablecar ride of 10 minutes will take you to the top station of altitude of about 1400m. Here you can still see only Geneva - Swiss side. If you are ready to walk - for a bit of hike, get out of the cable car station - restaurant building and hike uphill to you right, cross once or twice car street and walk up the paths in the woods. Passing by the paraglider departure point, you will arrive at the observatory (there is a big antenna tower) where you can see both lake Geneva and on the other side, the highest point of Europe, Le Mont Blanc at 4807m. Pick a day carefully for this, ideally when the sky is clear. Otherwise Le Mont Blanc may not show itself. This is pèrhaps the farthest most people come to (also many by car from Geneva and from France). However, you can go past the observatory and continue ahead (from here it's mostly flat) walk by the car route for a short distance and then into woods and fields. At the end you will come to a vast mostly flat field. At one point, you can see not only Lake Geneva and Mont Blanc but the ground underneath on French side and to the far right, even a glimpse of Lake Annecy. This will be about 1 hour walk or a bit longer one way from the cablecar top station.

The top cable car station has a nice French restaurant called Horizon. One idea is you do this one day of Thursday to Saturday in the late afternoon when the cable car runs until 23h00 while other week days only until 19h00. And from Oct, it will run maybe only in weekends. You hike and walk around, comes back to the station and have a dinner with the view of Lake Geneva, before taking the cablecar down.

An advantage if you are staying at a hotel in Geneva, the bus lines (incl above no.8) and tramways are all fee of charge. Your hotel will give you a "free" public transportation card for the whole length of your stay. "free", well this is financed by the city tax you pay with your hotel stay so actually you pay it so why not use it!
