We have just spent a few nights at the Kipling in Geneva and were very pleased with our stay. We booked the hotel because of all the excellent reviews of the place here on TA and were glad to find that the hotel lived up to the reviews on here.

What was most impressive was the rate for our stay - Switzerland is expensive and so we've be come used to paying quite a lot for hotel rooms. Our room at the Kipling was CHF200 per night (including tax but excluding the small per person city tax that is added to the bill at the end of the stay). Our room was roomy with large beds, a writing desk, a table with chairs, minibar and a well-appopinted bathroom with a large bath. The room had both heating and a controllable AC unit (which I imagine comes in handy in summer). The TV in the room had an excellent selection of channels in a range of languages.

When we arrived at the hotel the very helpful receptionist gave us all the information we needed including details of the free wifi access availalbe in the room and the Geneva transport card that all hotel guests in Geneva are entitled to. All the staff we came into contact with were very helpful and polite and spoke perfect English (which was great since our French is miserable).

The hotel is located very close to the main train station and to a tram stop for lines 13 and 15, which take you across the Rhone into the centre of Geneva proper and, in the opposite direction, up to the UN buildings. The hotel's proximity to the station means that the immediate surrounding area is a little grungy, but not in any way dangerous or scary.

On the back of our hotel room door was the usual 'room rate notice' that shows the rate for the room. It said the maximum rate for the room was CHF419, which is more than twice what we were paying, so I'm not sure when that rate is applied, so best to check carefully with the hotel about the rate, if you're staying during a peak period (which I think is especially the case when the UN is in full swing).

A great stay!

We stayed two nights in Hotel Kipling in December 2009. The hotel is not even a five minute walk from the train station and is very close to the Avis and Europcar offices. The room wasn't huge but was large enough and the bathroom was simple but clean. The television in the room has english channels and the hotel offers complementary internet with two dedicated terminals. The breakfast buffet was good and offered a wide range of food. We were able to walk quickly and easily into town and didn't end up using the transport passes we were given by the hotel. The staff were charming and eager to please.

The only problem is the lack of restaurant which we were aware of when we booked the hotel. We tried two of the sister hotels both of which didn't start serving until 1900, which is fine unless your jetlagged and want to go to bed early! We had a very expensive and poor quality bar meal at the Hotel Royal. The serving of soup was small and the hamburger was undercooked. We did have a reasonable meal at the Novatel which is just two streets away and they have a bar where you can sit and have a drink.

Would i stay there again... probably, its good value for money and centrally located in a quaint town.

Great hotel experience. Staff was friendly and informative. Rooms were well appointed, and location was just a couple of blocks from the train station (hop on one of the free trams for the short trip). We booked two rooms, one for us and one for our teens. The rooms were at the end of the hallway, with a small foyer. We were able to lock the door to the foyer and open our rooms up to each other, giving us more space if we wanted it. Neighborhood was nothing special but seemed safe, and getting around Geneva is easy.

Beautifully designed hotel that is a great place to stay. Rooms are small but well furnished and have a valuable asset in a kettle so if you've been out for the day you can come back and have a hot drink - also useful for breakfast if you want to go out to buy some food and eat in the room as the SFr 18 buffet breakfast is pricey (though to be fair this is not much more than Big Mac meal so maybe it just reflects prices in Switzerland).

It's a short walk, or one tram stop, from the railway station. There are a couple of streets nearby that have prostitutes touting for trade but overall the area is fine - the best thing about being near the railway is that it's easy to get away again as Geneva is probably the ugliest dullest city I have ever been to.

Rooms in the Kipling are clean and the furnishings look modern and new, staff are friendly and helpful, and the price is very reasonable for what you get.

Location is 10 minutes walk from the main Geneva transport hub (Cornavin), and also within 30 metres of the tram stop. As has been mentioned in other reviews, it is also near to the red light district, and walking back at night can be disconcerting as you pass a variety of interesting characters standing on street corners in the vicinity. However, if you'd rather stay away from the seedy side of town, then stay on the Rue de Lausanne, but you'd miss out on a number of good restaurants and bars in the area.

The hotel is located off the main road so is fairly quiet, but the rooms are well insulated anyway so you can close the windows to get a good night's sleep.

The only negative is the lack of a restaurant, but the Kipling has a few sister hotels nearby that you can use, so it's not a big deal.

All in all we enjoyed our stay, and would recommend to anyone.
