“Good Value, good and convenient location”
Reviewed 26 June 2012

I had one last night of my European vacation and needed a place to stay in Geneva that didn't break the bank. Hotel des Tourelles was the perfect place. Only a 10 minute walk from the main train station which got me directly to the airport. A pretty location with a view of the river. A large room, good WiFi, cable TV and breakfast. My room was spacious (though the bathroom was small) and even had a little table set in the bay window at the corner where I could look out over the river.
I didn't have much time for touring around but located right along the river allowed me to take a nice long stroll to the lake and the old town. I would stay there again if I happen to be in Geneva.

I stayed here for one night waiting for a friend to arrive to be transferred to Mandarin Oriental. So despite being right next to each other, the gap between the two hotels standing next to each other is immense and it is clearly reflected in the price. For CHF 130.00 for a single room with small breakfast included, it is good value for Geneva. The rooms are fine, nothing spectacular, but does not have air conditioning, so it was a bit challenging to fight off the heat wave in July. The shower room was very very tiny, which reminded me of an airplane lavatory. However, it has got a nice little balcony from which you can enjoy the view of the river. For the price you pay - still not cheap as it is in Geneva - I think it is an okay hotel to stay.

The hotel is located down at the Rhone river, and is easy to find. The set-up is not that of a typical hotel, there's no lobby area, only the tiniest of receptions, the breakfast room is small as well. The rooms are located in old apartments on different floors of the building.

The rooms themselves are nice, modern, clean - and that's essential and not always the case with hotels with a comparable price in Geneva. The bathroom are the very small, sailboat-type bathroom cabins, but again, clean, with enough towels, soap, hairdryer etc.

The Wireless for the PC worked well and was free - which is rare in Geneva. They don't have a business center, but they will print things for you at 15 cents per page.

Unfortunately, my room was oriented towards the street, where the tramways and other traffic were quite noisy until the early morning hours. I could only sleep with earplugs.

The breakfast is simple, croissants, bread, butter, jam, OJuice, some cold cuts, joghurt... but nothing to write home about.

The worst thing about the hotel is the stairway down to the river, which by its smell could be mistaken for a pissoir. Really disgusting, I learned quickly to hold my breath 5 yards from the hotel door when approaching the hotel from that side. The hotel staff was aware of the problem, but I have no idea what they could do about it...

So: if you're on a small budget, this is a decent solution for Geneva, you could do much worse for more money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that's oriented to the interior court.

The place and the staff are very pleasant. Beautiful view of the river - only the traffic can be a little bit disturbing when you need to open windows. Rooms and furnishing are older but still, everything is corresponding with the price. If you want a first class level (and pay for it) Mandarin Oriental is just nearby:)

Rooms are small, did not even have an alarm clock. When I used the hair dryer the lights in the room would flicker on and off. Bath room is smaller than what one would expect in a small RV. Lock on door is what I would classify as a "pretend" or "Mickey Mouse" lock. Did not feel safe in hotel. While I've never been in a jail cell, I can't imagine it being any worse than this hotel room.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

Stayed here for two nights in October. The hotel is an older building and not much has been done to it over the years. The bathrooms are modest, the wooden floors are a bit creaky, and the windows are not terribly soundproof. But the location can't be beat, with every room looking directly onto the river, and the entire downtown, the lake, great restaurants etc. all within easy walking distance. If you want luxury, the Mandarin Oriental is right next door -- with rooms about five times the price. If you want a good hotel that's a very good value, Des Tourelles is perfectly adequate. (As for the previous review calling it a "flophouse," the tender reviewer obviously doesn't get out much.)

I hate to beat up on this hotel so badly, because the front desk staff were rather pleasant, but it just put a bad taste in my mouth. Walking from the main train station should have been easy, but I messed it up. I knew it was next to the Mandarin Oriental but didn't realize it was up some stairs at the end of a bridge.
Upon entering, the place reminded me of a Bronx housing project. There is a number pad at entry, because, after 7pm, there may or may not be anyone at reception (they said they definitely close by 10pm). Check-in was easy and I went to my room. My housing project image continued as I walked up some tired looking stairs into a bank of rooms. I opened my room and was a bit further let down. The room just seemed barren. It wasn't small, but the walls were old looking and basically empty. There was a card table along one wall with a few brochures. The sink looked newer, but the mirror area also looked old and crackling. I almost didn't notice the bathroom, which is a roughly 5x5 room hidden away by a wooden board that you roll back and forth, open and close. Nothing wrong with the bathroom, and they do provide separate soap and shampoo.
I felt a bit odd there at night. The rooms are kind of like rooms in an old house (which is kind of the vibe you get in your bank of rooms) and noise travels. A few people were coming or going late at night, and one night I was woken up and a bit freaked out. I just felt a bit unsecure. I don't think that was a legitimate concern, but the whole place gave me an odd feeling.

My advice is, if you're going to Geneva, spend the extra money and do it right. I would not recommend someone stay at this hotel. Considering the Four Seasons was going for CHF1000 the nights of my stay, maybe I got a good deal, but I would have rather paid a bit extra somewhere else. The location is halfway decent, although there's only one direction to walk, really (towards town; the other direction seems dead and a bit seedy). The neighborhood felt safe at night as there is a luxury hotel just next door.
