“OK but...”
Reviewed 3 May 2014

Finding good, reasonably priced accommodation in Geneva is always a struggle. I stayed here for two nights during a business trip. It is one of the more modern hotels. The room was a reasonable size with good amenities but it felt well used and tired. The location is OK but yes, you may bump into the local 'ladies' plying their trade if you take a wrong turn (turn right, rather than left at the main entrance....) There are a number of restaurants and eateries in close proximity so no need to eat in-house. There is a great Fondue restaurant at the end of the street, towards the lake. In the absence of anything better, I would choose to stay here again.

I really like the novotel in Geneva: it is a combination of good location (Easy access from the airport by train to cornavin and surrounded by cool restaurants) and good price (where else can you stay in Geneva for $300???). The staff is wonderful especially the gentleman managing the bar. The breakfast buffet has all you need. The rooms are modern novotel room - well organized and practical

This is a good business hotel. The breakfast here is amazing. The location itself is okay considering it is next to the red light district. To avoid most of it, if you are walking from the main train station (6-7 minute walk) or the lake (6-7 minute walk again) you could use Rue de Zurich instead of Rue de Berne.

Room Tip: Try to get a higher floor to avoid the noise from the streets.

As you would expect from Novotel a very clean hotel with friendly staff. The food and drink in the restaurant/bar was expensive but not by Suisse standards. To move the lift you need a key card which seemed to stop working on a regular basis. The gym facilities were free as was the Wi-Fi. We would stay in this hotel again.

One night stay on Easter weekend 2014.
some critique:
- Balcony would have been nice, but was not usable due to bug/mosquitos plague. This was not a one day phenomena as the curtains had dead bugs in it from earlier. Really too bad as the view was nice in the 7th floor over the roofs of Geneva.
- Not a "real" door to the bathroom (as in the pictures). Does not close and this is a personal opinion, but I like closing bathroom doors.

Room Tip: Check mosquitos on balcony, top floor seems nice with the view

STAY AWAY from this hotel. I can't believe that they still have four stars, this is scandalous.

My room was on the first floor and here is what I experienced:

- located in the red light districts: prostitutes and drug sellers in the street of the hotel

- SMELL: rooms have no possibilities to open the windows. Therefore the air is very bad and smelly in the room.

- CIGARETTE SMELL On top of that, my room had a cigarette smell. I felt incredibly uncomfortable sleeping in this room with this terrible smoke smell all over the room.

- Smelly sheets.

- Dirty white spots on the canapé

- NOISY - rooms on the first floor are very noisy. I had to sleep with earplugs.

- cleaning materials and bags with dirty sheets during all night in front of my room (see photo). They had not been removed within 12 hours.
Unacceptable for a 4**** hotel.

- SOFA BEDS - they sell rooms on the 6th floor with a defolded sofa bed. How can this be acceptable?

I do not understand how this hotel can maintain 4**** and would for nothing in the world stay there again.

I had booked this hotel on last minute.com for a very good price (a standard double bed room).
When I arrived at the reception, I was told that they had a "very nice" room for me on the 6th floor. Sounded perfect until I got in the room and saw a defolded sofa bed. Scandalous - I have never seen that before in my life in a four star hotel. Immediately I rang the reception and asked for a room with a decent and normal bed.
Not even apologising for the incident, they gave me another room.

This other room was based on the first floor. It had a normal bed, however the above mentioned points made my stay very uncomfortable and I was more than happy to leave the hotel.

Dear Guest,
We are sorry to read that your stay did prove unsatisfactory at several levels. Though usually a rather quiet place it may, occasionally, happen that the obstreperousness of the street proves testing and we apologize for the inconvenience. Regarding the nearby neighborhood, we are aware of its potentially unsettling aspect, though your security and safety are managed both by our security personnel and the local law-enforcement agencies. Naturally, we understand your surprise and, once again, apologize, for issues that, unfortunately, prove delicate to handle in every major international city such as ours. We hope, nonetheless, to have again the opportunity to welcome you so you may get reconciled with our hotel.

I have stayed at the Novotel in Geneva at least three times and I will say for the price it isn't much. Small bar with very uncomfortable foot stools to sit on, very small rooms and no view except the city building across the street. About a 10-12 minute walk to the train station and yes it's next to the red light district which can be interesting at night. During events the rooms run over $400 per night and in the states a Holiday Inn Express is nicer. Overall its ok but not my first choice.
