We were very disappointed with the trip. The history is fine, but certainly not worth an all day trip. The views are much better on all the other routes on any Swiss trains. I wish we had not wasted an entire day on this.

We boarded the steam powered paddle boat the Belle Époque in Luzern and had a terrific cruise along Lake Luzern. Lunch in the first class dining room was part of the deal, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. When I heard the whistle blow I went down to see the steam engine fire up and there was half a dozen other blokes there as well, all hanging over the rails and watching the machinery. It must be a male thing, I think. At Flüellen we disembarked and after a short walk and a brief wait, we boarded the train and settled into our seats in the panorama car which allowed terrific views of the passing scenery. What made this part of the journey even more memorable was the fact that we were accompanied by a guide who talked about what we were seeing, showed us schematics of the spiral tunnels on her iPad, and also showed us a short film of the building of the new 57k tunnel that will open in 2016. We changed trains again not long before we arrived at Lugano. Highly recommended

We took this wonderful Train from Lucerne to Lugano. We went first class to get the full experience of the mountain pass,360 degree turns and multiple tunnels you go through. Well worth the money and I have some wonderful video I shot from the all glass car. We plan to do this again in December.

After reading the reviews from tripadvisor, we decided to upgrade to the Premium service from Lucerne to Lugano. The boat from Lucerne to Fluelen was nice and we received all the perks of the premium package which was a couple of rebate vouchers for lunch. The food was average. It was from Fluelen that the premium package started to go wrong. Nobody greeted us. We got onto the coach and the reserved seats but no swivel chair, no guide, no complimentary drinks and no show,!!! Apart from feeling cheated, the view itself was great. I would recommend going for this trip but forget the premium service. It basically didn't deliver. We travelled in March 2014.

The William tell express from Lucerne to Locarno was absolutely perfect in every way. Four seniors traveling together included first class seats southbound and would advise 2nd class tickets for return trip. Trip is about six hours travel time to and from Lucerne to Locarno or optionally to Lugano. We took the Locarno option based on railway employee recommendation.
Spectacular scenery entire trip. Train explores southern Switzerland and stops in one of the two cities mentioned with plenty of time for eating, sightseeing or shopping should you elect to do so. You may catch the train back to Lucerne at any of the scheduled departure times and we elected to spend several hours in Locarno so we caught the last train back. Most of the glitz and glam occurs on the outbound train so no need for 1st class tickets on the return. This trip is an easy day trip from your hotel in Lucerne and return Would allow a minimum of 6 hours. We also took the Golden Pass line to Montreaux on an alternate day and the William Tell is every bit as worthy!!
