A well located hotel in the old town, near the train station and numerous restaurants. The staff were very helpful and the breakfast location was excellent, overlooking the river.

Unfortunately, the rooms are not air-conditioned, and if you leave the windows/doors open, you will be subject to the noise from the drunken patrons of Mr Pickwick's next door, a blight on the Lucerne waterfront.

Some reviewers have been naive and harsh. Yes, Switzerland is expensive - we already knew that. This hotel is hundreds of years old and well maintained, considering. And yes, if I choose to stay in the very middle of the touristy area, there's going to be street noise. We loved the riverfront view towards Mt Pilatus, right above the famous bridges. We loved waking up on Saturday morning to the market stalls being set up along the river full of cheeses, meats, crafts, and produce. Breakfast on the hotel's balcony overlooking historic Luzern was delightful. The front desk staff was helpful.

I selected this hotel on the basis of some positive reviews posted on this website. However our stay at this hotel turned out to be nightmare due to the following reasons.

1. This hotel is quite far from the railway station. It takes atleast 15 minutes to reach this hotel and becomes inconvenient when one is tagging the luggage.
2. The staff of the hotel is rude and lacks courtesy. They require an orientation for courtesy and customer friendliness.
3. The hotel is extremely cramped. Only 1 person can use the lift at a time. The lift is also hazardous and is akin to a pulley used for transporting stuff up and down.
4. Rooms are extremely small. One has to lower heads to avoid bumping your head on the arches. It seems that this hotel was converted from a house. This is evident from the photos attached with this review.
5. From a safety point of view, there are no swipe cards.
6. The internet access is not free. One has to stand in a cramped corner of the lobby to view the computer screen and pay an exorbitant amount to access an antique computer.
7. Toilets like the room are extremely cramped.
8. Breakfast is sparse and disappointing.

Though the cost of our stay was Euro 150, we immediately shifted after 1 night stay to the nearby West Western Hotel situated in front of the Rosen Garten Art Museum.( i think it was Best Western Flora or Krone) . I would strongly recommend staying at the Best Western for reasons given below even though i had to spend Euro 250 per night.
= It is more closer to the railway station.( only a 4 minute walk). Thus it is convenient when one is traveling to Lucerne via train
= The staff is courteous & helpful.
= Breakfast buffet menu is much nicer.
=Hotel is 4 star compared to 2 star Hotel Des Alps.
=Toilet and rooms are cleaner and spacious.
=The rose garden Art Museum is right next door and is worth visiting for 1/2 an hour where an old courteous and friendly gentleman escorts you for a tour of the gallery. This museum is stocked with impressive paintings by Picasso, Monet and other artists.
=The transport junction of public buses for all major attractions can be reached within 5 minutes close to the hotel which becomes convenient.
= All the nearby sights/tourist attractions are within a walking distance. Of all the hotels surveyed in Lucerne, the Best Western has the best location and is the most convenient.

Room Tip: Avoid this hotel at all costs unless you want to ruin your money.

Location was good but room was tiny. There's barely enough room to sit on the toilet or take a shower. Also, people in neighboring rooms sat on their balconies smoking. Since there is not a/c, you either roast to death or breathed in smoke. Warning: Switzerland is very expensive but room did have free wifi.

The location is good, the the price of 260 euro per night is ridiculous! The hotel itself leaves much to be desired...the furniture and all decorations made me think i was in the nursing house for old people...but the worst was the pillow!seemed it was filled with bird's nests which were placed in a distance one from another!ah,yes, also the air conditioner didnt work so the night was veeeeeeeeeeery hot...the only positive thing was the breakfast, which, thanks God was included!it was good...especially its cool to sit on the terrace, eat and look around on the lake, mountains and waking up city...
But I wont return there ever!!!
