This is the only hotel during our three weeks in Italy, Austria, and Switzerland that we would give a poor rating. We booked two nights with them originally, but had to extend one night because Delta changed our reservations to the same flight a day later without our knowing it until five days before our return flight---but that's another story! We had opted for a suite at this hotel, one of their pricier options, but since we were to be there for several days and it was the last days of our vacation we decided to go for it. We had seen this hotel recommended by Rick Steves, who has never steered us wrong before. When we arrived and were given our room, no one at the front desk gave us any info about breakfast, directions to room, offer of help with luggage, etc. When we got to our room, we discovered it was on the front of the side of the hotel over one of the busiest streets in Lucerne. The noise factor was unbelievable and continued to be until the wee hours of the morning. Since the hotel is not air-conditioned, the options were to either open the windows to the noise or close the windows and swelter. We called to the front desk and were told that all suites were on that side of the hotel, and since it was Saturday, all rooms were booked. We were assured that the next night all would be quiet because it was Sunday night. Next night: same story. The third night we came back from sightseeing to discover a road crew right below our window tearing up the road, which continued until around midnight. When we called the front desk that night at 11:00 to ask them to find out how late the jackhammer would be continuing, they did offer to move us into a suite on the opposite side of the hotel away from the road. This was surprising since we had been told the first night there were NO suites on that side of the hotel. At that point, since we were already in bed and leaving the next day, we decided to stay where we were. When we checked out the next morning, we were charged one price for the first two nights and a higher price for the third night. We had been told when we had to add the third night that that would be the case based on the fact that it was "the last available room" for that night. We pointed out to the manager that since we had been offered a vacant room the previous night at 11:00, we couldn't quite see how that could be the case. We also pointed out that we had spent three fairly sleepless nights at the hotel. However, he stood his ground so of course we paid the bill as presented. But I thought at the time that PR was not alive and well at this hotel. The breakfasts were lackluster compared to other hotels where we have stayed in the past, both on this trip and others, and all their staff with the exception of one young lady in the dining room were certainly minimally friendly and helpful, the manager not at all. The location is good, right across from the train station, but that is about all we would say the hotel has going for it! We would definitely never stay here again and would look at other options in this beautiful city.
