“Fete des Vendages - drunks galore and lots of port a potties”
Reviewed 28 September 2011

We arrived in Neuchatel not realizing that the Fete des Vendages had grown to a massive, touristy affair with lots of drunks (seemingly friendly ones, though) filling the old city. Food vendor stalls were blocking the stores, many of which were not open and had covered their windows with plywood in anticipation of the drunken crowd. The food seemed mostly franchised vendors out to make a quick frank, "Indisches Essen", Thai, Chinese and crepes were crowding out more traditional food stands. Police were making a valiant effort to keep the crowds and the traffic under control.
Evening fire works over the lake were well done and worth seeing if you felt like wading through the overflowing portable toilets and vomit.

“A great alternative to Oktoberfest in Munich”
Reviewed 2 October 2010

In the fall every year around lac du Neuchatel I am told there are festivals to celebrate the harvest known as fete du vendanges. I was told that I have not lived in Neuchatel till I went to the fetes des vandanges. These remind me of smaller octoberfests, with more wine than beer and if you are around Neuchatel in late September, you have to go.

There are three day events filled with food, music, local wine (though beers are served), and parades. The streets are packed to if you are not comfortable with crowds I would suggest one of the smaller fetes in towns like Bas du Vully near Lac Morat (you can also get the gataeu du vully a dessert "pie" which is fantastic!).

The festivities go till 4 in the morning and so does the public transportation system.
