St.Gallen Youth Hostel
Reviewed 24 September 2012 via mobile

The reception only opens from 7:00-10:00 and 17:00-21:00. When we arrived at 15:00 there was nobody there, only other travelers lying on the couches like corpses. We went back around 18:00 to check in. By then the reception was fully functioning! The gentleman at the reception was very nice and helpful and recommended us the restaurant marketplatz, which was beyond satisfactory. I have to say (swiss) German food agree with me in general. The hostal is very clean and also very simple. We stayed on the floor 2 stories below the reception. Simple bunk bed, with sink and shower in the room, but the bathroom is a floor above. We came by car, but I saw a tram stop right next to the hostal. Simple but fully function establishment for budget travelers especially if you travel in a big group.

The staff is friendly and helpful. The rooms are kind of small and the restroom / shower are common just outside the room. We had hired a (six bed) room for 5 of us. Being on holiday and Switzerland being very expensive ( we were charged 8.2 Franks for 2 GLASSES of water during lunch at a MIGRO restaurant. Never seen anything ridiculous like this in any of the 20 countries I have traveled thus far !!!! ) we found this Hostel convenient from economy point of view.
The place is clean. You get free Wi-Fi. Bring your own towels and soaps and shampoos. At the head side of the bed there is a box like thing with a reading lamp and if not careful you will leave with a bump or two on your head.
The Breakfast is very good though there are no eggs at all. You have good cereals, Toast, Yoghurts, Cheese, Meat, Coffee , Juice, Tea.
The restroom and showers are clean but you need to pray beforehand that you do not get a neighbor who washes his feet in the common wash basin after he uses the restroom and wets up the whole place. We had to go thru that fate. And the Hostel staff does not do anything about that. I heard of an employee getting fired in Australia after he made the restroom wet.
Taxi from this Hostel to St. Gallen Station is around 22 Franks. There is a Tram station just outside the Hostel and you hear the clanging bells of the cow all through the day if your room is facing the pasture.
You need to pre-order your evening meal . I think there is no lunch. You got to pay for the laundry and double if clothes are more in number ( they give this service, there is no coin system ). They have ice creams and water ( 5 franks ) you can buy at the counter.
No housekeeping. We asked and they said that is why the rooms are cheap.
