The Schynige Platte bahn begins it's journey alongside the Berner Oberland Bahn at Wilderswil.
Mainly electrically propelled, the little engines have a big task getting their carriages up to the top station, but they manage it, in July, through flower strewn meadows. A little walk takes you up to the Hotel/Restaurant where we were met by a couple of people playing Alpen Horn. Quite tuneful. A Coffee and Cake later we set off on the circular walk. Every so often there are vertical wooden posts with slots cut through to indicate notable views. One large wooden frame takes in the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau for you to pose with. A nice new set of cow bells for people to ring, a Marmot colony, although the little chaps were all underground when we got there. The alpine plant garden and the highest alpine meadows in the area rounded off the walk. On the Saturday we were treated to the sight of an ancient steam locomotive taking its turn to go up. A lovely sight as it disappeared in a cloud of smoke and steam!

Some years ago I lived in Wilderswil while working at the air base which is now closed. There are very few places I had been lucky enough of having a 5 minute walk to work. I did eat in all of the local restaurants and the food was always wonderful. The people are friendly and it is very quite and safe. If you are not familiar with the area it is just located outside of Interlaken and is the first Bob train stop on the way to Grindelwald. Besides hotels there are rooms and apartments that can be rented. They have their own tourist office and a small Migros market. This is great place to base your stay for a summer vacation. The same is true for the ski season. Besides the town itself you can take the cog train up to Schynige Platte. There're you will find Alpine flowers and if you are up to it you can hike to First which is an all day event. Enjoy!

We traveled up to Schynige Platte by train. If you go on the early afternoon train you can get a free afternoon tea at the restaurant at the top.there is a lovely Alpine garden to walk through and some tracks from the station. On a clear day you have a great view of the alps in front of you. As we travelled on the train we passed cows - with cowbells ringing ! A very pleasant way to spend the afternoon.

Decided to spend one more day in Jungfrau region and changed all schedule afterward. It was really good chance to climb Schynige Platte which is suitable to walk around for every age. It takes just one hour to climb up by a cute train.

The quaint little cog railway trundles gently up the hill, you already get some good views of Interlaken going up, but when you are near the top you have what must be one of the best views from anywhere of the whole Bernese Alps. (You MUST choose good weather for this trip, otherwise you are wasting your time and a lot of money) There is a big and well-labelled alpine garden a few steps from the station, if you are interested in botany, and the restaurant offered a fabulous view from the terrace. Sometimes you can see marmots from the alpine garden. (late afternoon might be a good time)
